Biography

Vocalist/bass guitarist/songwriter Glenn Hughes is a true original. No other rock musician has carved such a distinctive style blending the finest elements of hard rock, soul and funk. That astonishing voice is Hughes' calling card. He's known as a singer's singer. Stevie Wonder once called Hughes his favourite white singer.

Hughes, a native of Cannock, England, absorbed all kinds of influences,… Read more in Amazon's Glenn Hughes Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Glenn Hughes at his best, 18 Nov 2001
This review is from: Building the Machine (Audio CD)
Building the Machine by Glenn Hughes is certianly one of the best rock/funk albums ever made. Glenn`s voice keeps on improving and it is no wonder that he is called "The voice of Rock". The band are all very talented musicians especially the guitarist JJ Marsh. The album sounds very fresh. If you are a rock fan buy this cd immediately....you definately would not be disapointed.

This CD is brimming with great songs. The great thing is I can't place this in one sphere of music as it crosses from classic rock to funk to soul to blues and often all together at the same time. I'm often reminded of Mo-Town with the rhythmic keyboards peppered throughout. JJ's great guitar work which can be whipped into a frenzy one second, then groove in awash of subtle blues the next gives an eclectic mix which is instantly accessible. Hughes voice is never stretched as he switches genre mid song, from searing rock pyrotechnics to the most soulful spoon full of honey and the funk comes from his inspired bass playing. There is nothing to criticise here, and if you're tempted this was my second of several Hughes' cd's, once you dip your toe in you will never get enough and will be searching for more. This is great place to start and I would also point you towards the 2005 release 'Soul Mover'

2.0 out of 5 stars Funked off, 10 Jan 2008
This review is from: Building the Machine (Audio CD)
If you come to Glenn Hughes as a solo artist via Play Me Out, don't come here. This album rocks but it doesn't groove or funk like the liquid love-every-singalong-minute of PMO. He has rounded up a tight band and does have an incredible voice - you do tend to turn it up and then just stand there, involuntarily, in front of the speakers with your mouth open - but please Glenn, funk me just one more time.
