Greenland Kayak building, 10 July 2010
This review is from: Building a Greenland Kayak (Paperback)
One of two titles purchased to read about building my first skin-on-frame kayak. The techniques described in each title vary a little but give plenty of thought provoking ideas. Easy to read and understand and describes the build of a more traditional Greenland design. The other title I purchased was by Christopher Cunningham and is perhaps a little less "original" (skin seamed along gunwhale and a few other mods for ease of construction) but is more fully illustrated and perhaps clearer to understand when starting from scratch. I am glad I bought both titles as both books offer a different slant on tools, jigs, steam boxes and other useful "know how" for the beginner. I just need to start now I have a "winter project"

Detailed instructions for a Greenland style kayak, 27 Jan 2011
This review is from: Building a Greenland Kayak (Paperback)
If you want to build a Greenland style kayak, this is a good place to start. Having read through several instructional books on kayak construction, it boils down to two books that are very nearly equals (in my opinion): This one, and Cunningham's "Building the Greenland Kayak: A Manual for its construction and use". The craft described by Mark Starr here is true to its origins, and lends heavily from the craft described by H.C. Petersen in his book "Instruction in kayak building", which has become THE reference book for authors in this genre. Petersens book is legendary, but the instructions could be difficult to follow for the first time builder, and the book itself is hard to come by. The craft and techniques in Starr's book are well described and illustrated, and the instructions are easy to follow. You can build a beautiful kayak from this book, one that will leave hardcore Greenland traditional paddlers green with envy in your minimal wake. Personally, I'm leaning towards Cunningham's book for my future project, but it's all about personal preference. In Starr's book (the one reviewed here) you'll get detailed instructions for building a Greenland style kayak and a matching paddle, true to the original crafts used by the ancient Inuits of Greenland. You'll also find all the tips you need on tools, techniques (like steam bending and the equipment you need to make for this) and materials. I chose Cunningham's book over this one because it contains instructions for additional gear, lots of additional tips to make the project easier to accomplish, and some ingenious modifications to the original craft, and lots of jigs that make the build easier without compromising the feel and seaworthiness of the finished craft. You'd be hard pressed to see or even feel the difference between crafts made from these two books. For the hardcore Greenland style enthusiast, Cunningham's modifications might be tough to swallow. If this is the case for you, then Mark Starr's book is the one you should choose.

First time SOF builders- read this one first!, 16 Dec 2011

After doing what I thought was exhaustive research on the subject, I started building my skin on frame kayak. I based most of my building on Cunningham's book, Building the Greenland Kayak, an excellent resource. But after struggling and failing with the rib bending step, I decided to purchase the Starr book. After Reading the rib bending section (Mark calls them "frames") I realized that Mark Starr offers some more novice-friendly solutions to skin on frame construction. I immediately went back and read the entire book before proceeding with my project. Would I still recommend the Cunningham book? Most certainly! As a matter of fact I would recommend reading and researching any material available to you before building a Greenland kayak. But I would definately begin my research by reading Mark Starr's book.

Building a SOF Kayak, 7 Jun 2009

This review is from: Building a Greenland Kayak (Paperback)
The book has all of the esential information to build a Skin On Frame Greenland Kayak. While at times the instructions may be vague, the reader is reminded that the Kayak is built to meet the builders specific needs. The book does not provide a detailed set of blue prints, rather instructions that capture the spirit of buiding a craft modeled after Native water craft in the Greenland style. The book is very detailed and provides many insights from the author regarding Greenland style Kayaks.
I would definitely reccomend this book.

Building a Greenland Kayak, 28 Dec 2007

This is a book that de-mitified the contruction of a greenland kayak. It is not a must to look for so many kind of specials and expensive wood.
Este libro desmistifica la contrucción the un kayak tradicional. La madera no tiene que ser tan especial y cara.
