This is probably a unique book of its type. There may well be other books detailing the city's architecture but the subject usually forms a chapter in a larger context. This book details the most interesting buildings in Melbourne's history, some of which no longer exist or which have been revamped and modernised.

The book covers the history of Melbourne from its pioneering days and the chapters deal with the different architectural periods. The text is extensive and comprehensive and each chapter contains numerous black and white photos and at the end there are glossaries of architects and sources of information. Anyone with an interest in Melbourne's history and architecture will find this book a mine of information.
