Product Description

Product Description

In the past fifteen years, Ireland has gone from being one of the poorest countries in the EU to one of the richest in the world. Of all the factors in this extraordinary transformation, none has been more prominent than the astonishing boom in construction. The transformation was created by a relatively small number of men, mostly from humble rural backgrounds. In The Builders, Frank McDonald and Kathy Sheridan tell the stories of these men, of the local and national governments that have helped them, and of the changes – physical and psychological – they have brought about. They also go behind the facades of these secretive men, explaining what drives them and what they do with their vast wealth. The story of Ireland's property developers has been the great untold story of the country's growth – until now.

About the Author

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!!, 27 Oct 2008
By Dublin Boy "DB" (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews
This is one of the most poorly researched and badly written books I have ever come across! The level of factual inaccuracy throughout this book leaves me amazed that any reputable publishing house would print it, while the sensationalist tabloid language makes it difficult to read. This is a poor attempt to cash in on the upcoming Christmas market, and the recent housing crash in Ireland. It offers very little detail beyond what you can get by "googling" any of these builders. This is a topic which I'm sure will be written about many more times, so keep your money in your pocket and wait for a better attempt.

Currently no. 1 best seller non-fiction, very readable, informative, entertaining. Insight into Ireland's celtic tiger, the personalities, how they operated in Ireland, England and much further afield. By award winning Irish Times author and writters - Frank McDonald and Kathy Sheridan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent review of the topic, 5 Oct 2009
By Dr. Paul Cullen "Paul Cullen" (Grafrath) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is an excellent review of the topic. Contrary to what some reviewers in this section think, the easy writing style is not sensationalist. And, while there may be errors of detail, there is no doubt that the overall thrust of the work and its characterization of the personalities involved rings true. I am a fourth-generation Dubliner on both sides of my family, and my father used to work for Dublin Corporation. Even when we were children in the sixties and seventies, I remember him complaining about the shoddy building of the city by people of a rural background who had no feel for the urban environment. The real tragedy, it seems to me, is that long after the financial legacy of the building boom has been absorbed, we will continue to live with the its architectural (if that terms is not too dignified) consequences.
