Product Description

The Prop Builder's Molding & Casting Handbook

This is the first book to contain, in one comprehensive volume, every molding and casting procedure of use to the theater props builder (no matter what his or her level or proficiency). The author demonstrates the techniques involved in using more than thirty different materials ranging from papier-mache to breakaway glass.

While the use of some materials&#150plaster and polyester resins, for example&#150is covered to some extent in other publications, information on the selection and use of rubber materials (latex, neoprene, silicone, and the urethanes) and the procedure for making breakaway windows and bottles is available only in The Prop Builder's Molding & Casting Handbook.

Written in an easy, conversational style, the book will be useful to anyone involved with theater properties, puppetry, and costuming (as professionals or amateurs). It will also serve admirably the needs of students taking classes in those subjects.

Completing the book is a special section on designing and building a vacuum forming machine suitable for use in constructing theater props. More than 450 photographs illustrate the step-by-step procedures explained throughout the entire text.

Whatever you want to know about molding and casting is probably in this book. How to work with Plaster, urethanes, resins. All nicely illustrated.Everything about mould making, all about casting materials. From the simplest to the most complex. The book even has a section on how to vacuum mould.Even how to get yourself set up in the beginning.I started doing moulding and casting for a hobby, but now I am actually making some money from it ,and having a great laugh at the same time.Previously I had no experience or tools, but this book has proved ideal. 5 Stars.

I was shocked at just how outdated this publication is! It looks like a re-print of some archaic School book from the 1970's. Everything is crudely set out (No Photoshop here, doubt PC's even existed when this was first published!) with small grainy photo's which are often difficult to make out. The text is also unusually large and very sparse throughout, meaning there isn't as much info within it's 236 pages as you might expect. Some of the materials used are also referred to by their brand name, and as this is an American publication, very few of the products or their equivelant are available here in the UK.

My honest opinion, avoid! Save your money and invest in a copy of 'The Mouldmaker's Handbook' By Jean-Pierre Delpech & Marc-Andre Figueres. This covers every aspect of mouldmaking and casting with clear and consise information, illustrations and photo's.

Great step by step guide. Quite old school, but that has been useful for me as it is very straight forward and tons of pictures. I already had some knowledge of casting and have found this book at a perfect level for me to tie in the loose ends and learn new techniques.
