Build Your Own Website The Right Way Using HTML & CSS teaches web development from scratch, without assuming any previous knowledge of HTML, CSS or web development techniques. This book introduces you to HTML and CSS as you follow along with the author, step-by-step, to build a fully functional web site from the ground up. However, unlike countless other "learn web design" books, this title concentrates on modern, best-practice techniques from the very beginning, which means you'll get it right the first time. The web sites you'll build will: Look good on a PC, Mac or Linux computer Render correctly whether your visitors are using Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, or Safari Use web standards so your sites will be fast loading and easy to maintain Be accessible to disabled users who use screenreaders to browse the Web By the end of the book, you'll be equipped with enough knowledge to set out on your first projects as a professional web developer, or you can simply use the knowledge you've gained to create attractive, functional, usable and accessible sites for personal use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get up to speed quickly 27 Jun 2006
Format:Paperback
This is a great book for people like me who have no experience building websites. Don't get me wrong -- it's not a simplistic book, or an easy book to follow. However, I have made more progress in 24 hours with this book than I made in 6 months with a professional web design program which cost me hundreds. The best thing is that I now know that I am on the right path, whereas while I was using the WYSIWYG program I was being pushed in the direction of using tables to structure websites. I now realise this is bad practice. I am half way through this book, and my website is halfway to completion, and already I can see how clean and efficient coding in HTML and CSS is. I don't feel that my pages are bloated any more, and yet I can achieve quite sophisticated effects.

Highly recommended for beginners who are prepared to stick with it. Believe me, I wanted the easy route in web design and it took me much longer to get nowhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent starting point! 15 Aug 2006
Format:Paperback
If you are interested in learning web design and can't decide which book you should buy first, this is definitely it! It will give you confidence and a solid foundation for further learning.

This is a wonderful book which I wholeheartedly recommend above all others as the first step on the way to learning web design. It is written very clearly in a step-by-step fashion which allows you to build on what you have just learned, and the resulting project web site is much more complete and impressive than I expected it to be.

The dialogue is very friendly and humorous at times and I felt that the author was really guiding me through the exercises. This made the book incredibly enjoyable to work through and I found that time passed by very quickly without studying feeling like a chore at all. The material from the supporting web site along with the suggested web links for further information were also fantastic.

I am very impressed by the author's obvious dedication to encouraging new web designers to follow web standards and to avoid learning bad habits. He is also keen to raise awareness of cross browser and accessibility issues.

I have learned much more than I expected from this book and am now much more confident with understanding and using code. It has also shown me that you don't need to invest loads of money on a WYSIWYG program to make a good web site; a simple text editor will do!

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good introduction 5 Mar 2007
Format:Paperback
I am completely new to web design and after trying to work through the tutorials on a well known WYSIWYG program I decided that the best thing would be to just learn HTML and CSS from scratch. This book is a very good introduction although I'm not sure how well I would have got on with it if I hadn't already done some HTML research on the web. I certainly wouldn't say this is the only book you have to read on the subject but is worth reading. The best thing about this book is that it gets you into good habits right from the start. If I hadn't read it I'm sure I would be using tables for web page layout by now. The worst thing about it is that it gives the impression that web design is much more simple than it actually is although a book for novices shouldn't put people off. There are already I pile of questions I have about the way different browsers interpret code and how to deal with different users having different screen resolutions that this book doesn't answer but it never pretended that it would. I have to say though that I do feel inspired by the author to find out as much on this subject as I can and to build high quality websites. Overall I would definitely recommend this to a beginner in web design.
