Book Description

An intermediate guide to hard-surface modeling in Blender. The emphasis is on futuristic, science fiction vehicles. The book demonstrates a wide variety of techniques, such as cutting windows into curved surfaces, adding hull panels and lines to smooth models, and building common vehicle components. Related topics such as vehicle design are also covered.

The final project is the "Rocket Bike". By the time the reader gets to this section, they will be able to apply tips and techniques shown throughout the book to create their own version.

This is not a "Blender 101" book. It's aimed at people who have a basic grasp of the software and want to learn more complex modeling techniques. The book is exclusively devoted to modeling; there are only passing references to materials, textures, lighting, etc.

If you have a basic understanding of Blender and want to design your own vehicles, this book is for you.

Note: This book is legible on a Kindle, but the pictures are best viewed on a tablet or PC (in color).

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book for the intermediate 28 Dec. 2012

This is a very good informative read. I would say that you'd be lucky if you did create your own rocket bike at the end, but this book certainly gets you started.

The real value of this book is the tips and tricks given in the sections prior to the step-by-step guide. There are lots of useful snippets of information from somebody that you can tell has done a lot of modelling. I found the tone and pace of the book to be just right for these sections. You can try the concepts out and get a real insight in to the "right" way to model. I know some may have different styles. In fact, the author often mentions that it's his way of doing things and there are other approaches. But some useful guidance on polygon count is a good example of how all designers should approach their 3d creations.

Ultimately this is a book, and I think the task of actually explaining a complex model like a rocket bike was never going to be easy. The section on how to put it all together doesn't really work for me, and I ended up just reading it and agreeing with the steps. You'd probably need a very lengthy video to really do justice to such a project.

But that shouldn't stop those with an appetite for 3d modelling from purchasing this book. It's real value for money and solidifies what might take you a long time to weed out of the internet. It certainly kept me busy for many hours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Centred and to the point 26 Mar. 2014

This book is exactly what I was looking for. It doesn't include shaders, lightning neither animation, only modelling. It's really extensive in its area and everything is explained carefully.

If you want to learn modelling with Blender this is your book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great tips from a great artist 31 Aug. 2012
By Matthew J Muldoon - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
So when I got this I though I was just getting a regular tutorial on how to create killer sci-fi bike. Boy was I wrong. One of the great things about Chris is he is an amazing artist, period. So I was super surprised to see that the first 188 pages of this ebook are full will slick little tricks Chris uses to create stuff like gears and chains, missiles, HUDS, gages, switches, hull paneling, grates, and I could go on and on. But I want to make clear this is not a step by step tutorial. It is more of an intermediate workflow walk through. All you really need to do is take a look at Chris's work and I think you'll see $5 to learn some of his tricks is well work it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny 21 Feb. 2013

I am a very large fan and supporter of the Blender Community. I very much appreciate this book, and the format. For about five bucks you can't go wrong. Yes, this book expects that you have a basic understanding of Blender, but there is a wealth of information that can be utilized in multiple projects. The price is perfect, and I HOPE that the author is working on additional books. If there is a book in the works, it will definitely be on my purchase list, as this one should be on yours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but.... 20 Jun. 2013

It's not a bad book and actually useful, but a little sparse on intermediary steps. Maybe I should have read the description more carefully, but for the money, it's still a good purchase. The author is an amazing Blender modeler and if I ever turn out work approaching that quality, I'll be back to up the rating to five stars..

Addendum: October 29, 2014. I'm back and I'm upping the rating to five stars!
