The thing about Building Your Own House is that so much of the subject relates to planning, finance, buying the plot, preparation and project management before you can even lay one brick on top of another. This book covers the whole caboodle from the idea stage right thru to completion on site and moving in.
We're building our own house employing key trades and doing some oursleves and I found this Haynes Manual very useful including the details of construction. There are laods of photos and diagrams which give it the edge over other books on the subject I've read, and it's bang up to date with all the complex air tightness testing and U-value targets and renewable energy that a lot of books seem to skip.
I think very few selfbuilders take on all the big stuff like bricklaying and roof construction from scratch, so it's probbaly expecting too much to be shown in great detail how to master each specific trade. You'd have to buy a separate book on each trade or really get yourself trained on a course until you have good experience. But this gives a very useful guide to each stage of the project, and shows which trades do what and when. All the different construction methods for floors, walls, roofs, drainage etc are explained with clear photos and diagrams. It's actually a pretty good read too with some amusing snippets. Enjoyable and useful guide.
