Product Description

Product Description

Top of the range hi-fi apparatus is now termed 'high-end equipment' and the name is a good indication of the prices charged for it. For those who can not, or will not, pay these prices, there is another solution offered in this book: build your own (at considerable cost savings). But this book is aimed not only at this sector of the market, but also at the many enthusiasts who want to be able to experiment and make their own modifications to their 'high-end' equipment. This book contains construction projects for solid-state and valve preamplifiers and power amplifiers, active cross-over filters, an active subwoofer, a mono/stereo compressor and a headphone amplifier.

Long in the tooth 9 Feb 2006
This book was a bit of a disappointment for me. It claims to guide you through the design and build of high quality audio equipment, but it's really only a collection of circuit diagrams with brief descriptions.
I was hoping that this book might actually explain how some of the circuits work, but you just get a diagram, a list of components and a few tips on building the design.

This book is very old now. While I'm sure that Pre- and Power-Amplifiers haven't changed significantly - the availablility of ICs will have changed
Nobody uses Dolby Pro-Logic any more, so a the decoder circuit listed in the book is completely obsolete and demonstrates the book's age.

If you want some relatively simple amplifiers to build and have access to PCB Etching facilities then this book is fine - Just don't expect it to teach you any theory
Also, be prepared to search for modern alternative components if the listed ICs are no longer manufactured.

My thoughts too 7 May 2009

The above review is quite true. The circuits do not have any deep analysis. Some of the components used e.g. dual JFET are very hard to get, I tried and failed. This was quite a few years ago so I think now it would be even harder. You might be be able to find an alternative component but you would need to understand the detailed operation of the circuit which you don't get.

The designs are from the early 1990s and reflects the thinking of that era. You could find similar amplifier designs in more recent books but here you get it all, pre-, power- and headphone amplifiers, filters, power supplies and even a sub-woofer.

The amplifiers projects cover 30-200W and goes from simple, 30W using a module, to the very complicated. To me the medium power amplifiers (60, 70 and 90W) looks like good and attractive designs and they come with detailed instructions for building the needed power supplies and the wiring required.

There are drawings provided for the printed circuit boards required.

If you are serious about designing and building your own equipment there are many circuit ideas to get inspired by in this book. The protection circuits provided are more elaborate than I have seen in other books.
