So many great books are coming out about basic website design. Build a Website for Free
is one of the better ones. I wish I could have found a book like this a few years back when I was trying to build my first website from scratch. It would have saved me a lot of frustration and time.

Build a Website for Free does a good job of covering the basics is an easy to understand way. By reading this book, anyone could gather together the resources needed to create a website and then get it going live. There's even a few bells and whistles described that would take the beginner a few steps beyond the average website.

Great Great Book! 6 July 2009
By JulieG - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is awesome! I am currently trying to create my first website, and have had ZERO training in this area. I was considering taking a college course in web development, but after reading this book there is no need! I learned more in this book than I did in several of my undergrad classes :) Most of all, it is extremely well organzied and easy to understand. I am brand new to web development and I feel that I have a fundamental grasp on the basics just after the one weekend I spent reading this book. Most of all, it gives some fabulous websites to check out that are very resourceful. Best of luck!

A Bargain That is Priceless 29 July 2009
By K. A. Harman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
In this day of "freemium" this book is the real deal. It is exceptionally well-written and organized and lives up to its name and purpose by walking you through the entire life cycle of a web site all the while providing multiple examples of open source and freeware that just about anyone can use. The book provides added value by pointing out typical pitfalls to avoid and additional information for the person who is not a technical novice. The writing is clear and concise. Jargon is minimal, concepts are explained in standard, well-written language that anyone can understand.

The book offers an optimal balance between technical parameters and business strategy. In my mind it is a classic! I plan to use it in my course on eCommerce.

The author has provided an honest appraisal of what it takes to succeed in eCommerce and an honest critique of the opportunities posed by Open Source and freeware web development applications. It is so filled with good advice and resources that it is "must reading" for any business owner or manager who wants to develop a web presence or understand open source and Web 2.0 applications and strategies.

It would be hard to produce a professional looking website with the free tools 18 May 2011
By T. Anderson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
In the Introduction to Build a Website for Free, the author, Mark Bell, notes there are two primary reasons for buying the book: 1) you don't know anything about websites but you want/need to build one or 2) you know something about websites but you want to know more about the "free" part. Build a Website for Free is written in the "for dummies" style--lots of rudimentary information presented in short paragraphs with prominent headings. This book is great for someone in category 1...I'm thinking of passing it on to my Dad who keeps threatening to "learn computers." For those in the fairly savvy but thrifty category (that's me), there are plenty of references to free products/services...BUT...the old adage "you get what you pay for" applies. These free tools are great to build a site for the little league or your annual family reunion, but if you are starting a business the "free" route is probably not going to produce a website of the caliber you will need to be taken seriously by the average internet consumer.
