4.0 out of 5 stars Saved by the Clash 12 Dec 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I expected something more from this album. Having seen Rupa & Co in Paris I hoped it would rekindle the excellent memories of the energy and exotic vibrancy of that set. The inclusion of The Clash's Guns of Brixton is a highlight - the rest is sadly just OK.

Another very strong offering from the always pleasing Rupa & Co. if only we in the UK had a chacne to see them play live!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Their Strongest Entry 25 Feb 2013
By Aaron Harmon - Published on Amazon.com

I've enjoyed Rupa & the April Fishes previous albums. I found that this album wasn't up to par with their previous entries. The Jovial sound and French lyrics were replace by a flat recording and angrier protest lyrics, it's not a terrible album, but also not as good as their others

5.0 out of 5 stars A great find! 31 Dec 2012

We are so happy we were turned on to this amazing woman and her fabulous band. We happened upon Rupa in the Calendar section of the LA Times. They are hard to categorize, which is a good thing in my opinion. Maybe Gogol Bordello-ish only much more subtle.

It seems to be getting harder and harder these days to find truly good music. Today's music is more of a product, where yesterday's was more of an art. Rupa and The April Fishes definitely falls into the latter category. After we read about her in the paper, I looked online to see where they might be playing. As good fortune would have it, we found they were playing only about an hour from us in San Diego.

I'm almost housebound due to a chronic illness, so my husband and some good friends went to see them. He and our friends said they were amazing and are looking forward to their return to this area. Ck them out on You Tube and then read about them in Wikipedia. Rupa herself is a doctor, a professor, speaks several languages and is truly a renaissance woman!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Fusion of music 31 Dec 2012

A very cool album mixing reggae, African music (souk?) funk and soul. Cam out of nowhere and blew me away. The title track Build looks back on life and is very reflective. a great album if you want to cool out with some good friends and enjoy the ambiance.
5.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable 28 Jan 2013

This was my first purchase of Rupa and her friends. I'm not a critical listener. I simply enjoy diversity in my music venues. I ordered the disc to check out their music and thoroughly enjoyed it. I would say that it's not for everyone. If your tastes run in this direction, you're going to love it.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great "hard to categorize" music 6 Dec 2012
By GPS - Published on Amazon.com

Discovered Rupa when they performed as part of the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts last year - during an all day street festival with multiple stages. Unique sound that blends world music - Spanish, French and other cultural influences, but also has an Indie rock vibe.
