Pretty good stuff! 27 Jun 2007
By Mick B
Format:Audio CD
Having been a big fan of Bad Brains for ages I was really looking forward to a new album an especially with Adam Yauch as a producer. The band hasn't sounded this energetic for ages, with an exception of HR who at times doesn't sound like he's into the music at all. On the contrary, his voice is really outside the rest of the band on the rockier tracks, while on the slower reggae songs he fits in better, but still sounds amazingly unispired. Yauch tries to save this by bringing different effects to the vocals in the mix, but it still makes a poor effort from HR I'm sad to say.

That aside the album has it's moments, and it's a nice return to the old school Bad Brains. The punk songs (and this time it's hardcore punk, not metal) have tons of energy although they don't rank along the bands best songs when it comes to writing. But the energy is really good and some of the songs do grow on you. The reggae tracks however are along the better ones from Bad Brains. I never thought they did great reggae, but this time along the groove and vibe is actually quite good. Though still miles away from Kingston.

All in all, a really nice return. I'm not sure if we actually could ask for more, and even though it's not up there with their early classics it's their best album since 'Quickness'(1989).

They're back 27 Jun 2007
By Kareem
Format:Audio CD
That's right, the brains are back and haven't been this bad for ages. Bad as is in good. Although some didn't like "God of Love" I thought it was actually quite good, granted I preferred the reggae songs, as I felt the "rockier" songs weren't up to par, except for "cool mountanier".

This sees the brains back on the form last seen on "Quickness" or "I against I", hell, this an album unto itself, with Yauch providing a few more dub echos to the effect. This album seems to be a mix of ALL their albums, a final goodbye maybe? You've got your short, hardcore numbers, dubby reggae, straight up reggae, longer (3:00's) punk songs, all mashed together.

Long live the brains!!! Let the contemporary poseurs quake for jahsoldiers have returned to cleanse the land of impurity and sh*te, whilst delivering soothing reggae and searing hardcore.

Leave It Alone 31 Aug 2009
Format:Audio CD
Yet another Bad Brains album. Face it: 'Quickness' was the start of the slippery slope and it's been getting worse ever since. This, if anything is even more depressingly average than previous efforts. The vocals are plain rubbish, laden with effects to try and disguise the fact. The music is average reggae mixed with recycled hardcore riffs. Give up, please.
