Writer-director Alan Parker's feature debut Bugsy Malone is a pastiche of American movies, a musical gangster comedy set in 1929, featuring prohibition, showgirls, and gang warfare, with references to everything from Some Like It Hot to The Godfather. Uniquely, though, all the parts are played by children, including an excellent if underused Jodie Foster as platinum-blonde singer Tallulah, Scott Baio in the title role and a nine-year-old Dexter Fletcher wielding a baseball bat. Cream-firing "spluge guns" sidestep any real violence and the movie climaxes cheerfully with the biggest custard pie fight this side of Casino Royale (1967). Unfortunately for a musical, Paul Williams's score--part honky-tonk jazz homage, part 1970s Elton John-style pop--lets the side down with a lack of memorable tunes. Nevertheless, Parker's direction is spot on and the look of the film is superb, a fantasy movie-movie existing in the same parallel reality as The Cotton Club and Chicago. A rare British love letter to classic American cinema, Bugsy Malone remains a true original; in Parker's words "the work of a madman" and one of the strangest yet most stylish children's films ever made. --Gary S. Dalkin

5.0 out of 5 stars this never dates 13 Mar 2009
My daughter's school recently put on a production of this story, and we decided to buy it as I had not seen it for years. I was pleased to know that you didn't have to have the subtitles on as that would have been annoying for the whole film. We thoroughly enjoyed it and then re-watched the songs with the words and sang along. I felt the film was as fresh as when it was released all those years ago and my daughter loved it watching it for the first time. A great family film, that has stood the test of time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great 18 Mar 2006
I recently bought the DVD and I have to say it is one of the most cleverly written musicals ever. I was recently in a stage production of the show, and on the last night of the show, all cast members sat down to watch the original version. The acting was miles better than ours! I would definitely recommend this film, particularly young children. Young boys will enjoy all the different gangsters such as Fat Sam and Dandy Dan, while young girls will love the character of Tallulah the show-girl. 10 out of 10.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as I remember... 8 Jun 2009
Well, to start I have to say how happy I am with the speed of delivery on this item. I had it literally next day.
The item arrived in excellent condition, no dents or scratches.
This is an excellent film for kids, family or nostalgia. I bought it for my daughter as she is performing in a stage adaptation of the film at her school. Also, this is one of my wife's favourite films.
This is the sing-a-long edition, which means you get 'karaoke style' words appear on your TV screen during the main songs of the film. This feature, however, can be switched off within the DVD menu to allow for normal viewing. Perfect if you have budding budding actress in the house.
If this film is your sort of thing and you're thinking of buying a copy, then I would highly recommend this edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great film, great acting, great songs......... 11 Nov 2006
By Stephen Wright VINE VOICE
I can thoroughly recommend this film, a real tongue-in-cheek look at gang warfare from a child's perspective. If only real life were like this, and the only bad thing to happen to anyone anytime was that they ended up with a custard pie in the face. Despite what the Amazon reviewer says, (fortunately picked up by Rob Cook, one of the previous reviewers), I think the music is excellent. I don't understand why the Amazon reviewer feels that the songs aren't memorable, since we purchased the soundtrack CD soon after buying the DVD because we felt the music was so good. Paul Williams should be congratulated on the musical score, not ridiculed. It is made all the more impressive when you realise from the notes accompanying the DVD that Williams recorded the songs whilst touring the States with a completely different show, sending the songs almost one at a time as they were completed back to the UK studios at Pinewood. This meant that with the time constraints, there was no time for re-writes, the kids then having to painstakingly learn to lip-sync their allocated songs in preparation for the final recording.

Kids (especially big kids like me, I'm fifty-two and a half) will love this. It's just a fun film stuffed with memorable moments and great tunes, 'Fat Sam's Grand Slam' 'Bad Guys' 'My Name Is Tallulah' and not forgetting the title track, to name but a few.

We've watched this DVD three times already since buying it, and we haven't even got any kids! So, if you want a bit of good all-round family entertainment with some great acting and original sing-along songs, look no further. We love it! Great stuff!

Footnote: I have just heard that there is to be a newer print of this title due for release in December 2006. This review is obviously based on this version so potential purchasers may want to compare the differences between these editions before ordering. Steve. (November 2006)

4.0 out of 5 stars The difference between the two DVD editions 6 Feb 2005
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Love the movie. I'm just here to help those who might be wondering about this edition (the newer, brown cover special edition) compared to the earlier DVD release, ASIN B00004D0AJ.
EXTRAS: The earlier edition has no extras. This special edition has a fair amount: director's commentary audio track, trailers, brief (one page per) character biographies, a photo gallery (motion accompanied by music), an art gallery (from sketches to full painted art, motion accompanied by music), a featurette, trivia, and a very nice 12-page booklet with a detailed production history by Alan Parker.
VIDEO: This special edition presents the movie properly letterboxed, and the print is clean and sharp. HOWEVER - the earlier edition is not just widescreen, it's ANAMORPHIC widescreen (formatted for 16:9 televisions). And because there are no extras on the older edition, the average bitrate for encoding is higher. The picture, though, is not quite as good. So you need to decide how important it is to have an anamorphic widescreen DVD.
I can't understand why the newer edition takes such a step backward (non-anamorphic widescreen) in its presentation, but I felt it would be worthwhile to let people know.

The previous reviewer has stated that ITVDVD have released Bugsy Malone in an "enlarged version". This is wholly inaccurate. The original DVD was released in a non anamorphic 4:3 letterbox transfer of the original 1.85:1 frame. This was the regular practise of Carlton Video and then ITVDVD for their no frills style of DVD distribution and exploitation of the Rank, ITC, Granada Film libraries. The Blu-Ray release now gives us a full anamorphic transfer preserving the correct ratio, which is 1.85:1 not 2.35:1 as mentioned, incorrectly, by the same reviewer, thus enhancing picture detail. The effect fills your 16x9 screen as it should with the correct framing. Bugsy Malone was shot soft which does give a diffused look but this does not detract and is visually clearly a marked upgrade from the DVD version's and probably the best image we will get from this film at the present time. OK Just to clarify, the ratio on this Blu-Ray is correct the previous DVD's were simply not anamorphic and this is the reason the earlier reviewer seems dissappointed but he is incorrect. The 5.1 audio mix on this release is not paticulary good but the solid original mono mix is also available so you have the best of both world's. Overall a much improved image and a good buy.
