My 6 year old son received this as a present. He is clearly the target market, but this fact did not prepare me for the 72 hours (and counting) of total bug action that has followed on from the moment he opened this book.
It's a real hands-on guide, each creature gets about 4 pages - a couple on anatomy and background, and then a couple describing how to to catch them, construct a suitable house, diet, etc. The houses are (unlike a lot of these kind of books) easy to build for small people and don't need anything particularly fancy.
The book covers just about everything small and alive you're likely to find in a garden or pond - woodlice, slugs/snails, aphids, caterpillars, worms, earwigs, ladybirds, spiders, crickets, pseudoscorpions(!), mosquito and dragonfly larvae and water boatmen.
Great close-up pictures throughout and the level of the writing is spot on - easily understood but plenty of real information.
Got my son in the garden (rain and shine) and has really got him fired up about his local mini-wildlife. Highly recommended!
