My son enjoyed this book so much, we bought the whole series. He is 10 years old and autistic, and has over the past year of me reading these books to him become so enamoured with the characters and stories that he is now attempting to read them himself - 18 months ago he could barely read. This is a major milestone after years of low confidence making him see reading as a chore. We are thrilled by the enthusiasm for reading this has created in him, and it also develops his self-image as an animal lover and expert. However, the huge outcome is something completely unexpected. My son couldn't wait for more books to come out, or accept there may be no more, and so started drawing his own pictures and coming up with his own stories for Bug Buddies. This is an incredible achievement as he also hates art at school, but has now drawn literally hundred of pictures to story board everything, dictates stories to me, and has now attempted spelling and writing the words for the stories himself. He spends hours a day discussing his ideas with me, drawing and writing - 18 months ago he could barely read, draw or write. These books have been the catalyst for all of this development, and we are incredibly grateful for what these books have done for our son. (He is desperate to show all of this to Joe Miller!)
For other parents of boys who are keen on animals, I would also strongly recommend the Little Dolphin stories by Lucy Daniels, which my son also adores and has read with me over and over again.
