Product Description

After the first season of Buffy The Vampire Slayer became a ratings success the show was renewed with a bigger budget and twice as many episodes. Seeds are sown through the early episodes for many of the stunning plot developments later in the season: there's a slow burn for the relationships building between Buffy and Angel (no surprise), Giles and Jenny (nice surprise), and Xander and Cordelia (huge surprise). Most importantly, we're introduced to important semi-regulars Spike and Drusilla ("School Hard"), Oz ("Inca Mummy Girl") and fellow Slayer Kendra ("What's My Line Part 1"). Their appearances tackle youth issues such as sibling rivalry, sexual maturity and rejection.

But nothing that came before it prepared audiences for the latter half of season 2. In the extraordinary double act of "Surprise" and "Innocence" every aspect of the show grows up in a big hurry: the result of Buffy sleeping with Angel is a series of tragedies everyone is powerless to predict or prevent, a piece of powerful storytelling conveyed with pared-down dialogue and remarkable performances from the young cast. All of these threads are tied together then torn apart by the two-part finale "Becoming". With a cliffhanger ending to rival The Empire Strikes Back, the second chapter of Buffy The Vampire Slayer closes in tantalising style leaving everything at stake. --Paul Tonks

On the DVD: The computer-animated menu opens this gorgeous box set in style with a tour through a dark and oppressive cemetery, a lavish display of graphics that's all the more impressive when compared to the uneventful DVD for the first season. Most of the extra features are concentrated on the last disc, which includes the obligatory biographies, trailers and TV spots that add little value to hardcore fans but serve as a good introduction to the world of Buffy for non-adepts. The three featurettes are captivating: "Designing Buffy" offers a wealth of information about the set designs, and even includes a walk through of Buffy's home; "A Buffy Bestiary" features every monster from the second season, and "Beauty and the Beats" explores the make-up artistry and special effects. There are also brief cast interviews, in which James Masters ("Spike") reveals his American accent. All in all the extras make a worthy accompaniment to the spectacular season 2 episodes, though one might regret that Joss Whedon did not offer a commentary on the double bill season finale "Becoming". --Celine Martig

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! 31 Mar 2006
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
These episodes have great memories for me! I was in high school when the first season of BTVS came out and from since then i have been totally much so, that i use to save all my pocket money for the box sets as a 14 year old, now that is dedication!
Anyway, the first episode is great. It's a basic summary of the slayer indenial of her slayery (my word) duties and her first few days at her new high school.
It really is a brilliant episode to a brilliant series - and who would have known at that point that it was going to run for 7 successful years.
A great episode to begin your very own buffy obsession, and don't miss all the other seasons.xx

4.0 out of 5 stars the start of a great, original series... 4 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
I must admit that i never watched this episode when it was first on BBC2 and only got into it about half way through series 1 basically because the title put me off. When I saw this tape at blockbuster i rented it out and was really suprised at how good it was.
Usually the first episodes are either really poor or filled with stupid cliff hangers... this simply sets the situation and builds up the characters and throwsw in plenty of background info.
Even the minor characters are good especially Darla! (Ps. look out for her in new Angel now on Sky - soon to 4)
Well worth the money but i think if episodes 1-4 on tape had been there i would have paid a bit extra for that instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars BUY IT! 13 Mar 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
Either if u are a Buffy veteran or a newbie to the series, DON'T hesitate it buying this, and the second box set to this AMAZING season! (released 26th April). Series 2 is by far the best so far, (up to halfway through season 4 in u have sky, or at the end of this one if u don't), and this box set has everything! It introuces and sets the scene for the most spine-chillingly exciting finale, but the first 11 episodes in part one are a must! Whats my line part one and two introduce Kendra,(a new slayer for those who are newbies) and exciting action sequences develop into a deep relationship between Buffy and Angel, which seems to be going well until temptation gives in..........! I give this set five stars, and look, it is beautifully packaged as well! (can't u just imagine how proud u will be with this chunky set on ur bookshelf, and showing it off to all ur envious mates! )

This is a great 2 episode video. It has just the right amount of suspence to keep u hanging off the edge of your seat. David Boreanaz looks as gorgeous as ever and is the main character in this video. You follow his transformation from good to evil. In this episode alot of secrets are revealed. Like the love triangle between cordy, xander and willow and the truth about jenny calendar. If you are a Buffy fan u have to watch this un-missable video!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really, really cool 11 July 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
I have to say I'm not the worl'd biggest Buffy fan( in fact I'd never watched the show before), then my Buffy obsessed friend forced this vid into my VCR and made me watch it. I was astounded. The writing was so good and it's soooo underrated. I thought this episode was kinda depressing. I liked when they found out who Jenny really was and also when Cordy jumped out and shouted Surprise; that was cool as well. I'm not admitting it to my friend, but I am hooked on this series now!( Plus I think seth green who is Oz is reallly really cute and should be developed more as a charecter.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Buffy fans must buy this.
A major turning point, not just in season 2, but in the whole series. This led to Buffy becoming a much darker show than it had been previously, and totally addictive.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great improvement over season 1.
Buffy season one in hindsight now appears a little dated. The same cannot be said about this box set, however this probably owes something to a character called Spike. Read more
