Reprint from 2004 "Party Food" book. Not a buffet book at all. 28 April 2010

This is more of a magazine that you would see at the checkout stand at Walmart. It is not a book per se, it's 96 pages. It's stapled together and my brand new copy is already coming apart. This was previously published in 2004 as part of a larger volume, Perfect Party Food Made Simple to include the same pictures. If I had known that I would not have purchased this book, I own that one. This had a publication date of 2009, so I'm thinking it's all new stuff from Ms. Jones, whose entertaining books I love. How disappointing. It's not worth sending back because of the return shipping charges. The pictures actually look like reprints from some of her first books in 1995. They're very dated. And if that's not bad enough, most of the recipes and pictures are the exact same ones from Perfect Party Planner. And aside from some rearranging it looks like the same book just with a different cover.

Her spicy potato wedges I have made many times, they are quite tasty with the combination of garlic, allspice, coriander and paprika. Instead of boiling first and then roasting, I just go straight to the oven. No need for that additional step and they taste crisper being just oven cooked.

I made the filo tartlets for a wine party one time but I filled with crab meat in spicy peach mayonnaise instead of the suggested smoked chicken. Any filling would be appropriate and they are quite pretty (and tasty).

Ms. Jones recipes are quite good; however, this book should not have been titled "Buffet Parties." There are very few buffet serving ideas and few pictures of buffets and no placement guides to show how to set up silverware, dishes, etc to make the foot traffic move through the line. This book is about finger foods. It should have been titled, "small bites."

If you want a book to truly set up a buffet then get Betty Crocker's Buffets. That book has been discontinued but purchase it if you can because it really is an essential buffet guide. The pictures are very dated, but the recipes are solid, and you won't go wrong with its advice. All the menus and buffet layouts are first class. Betty Crocker should update and reprint that book, the cream puffs were to die for. It's an essential party guide. This book is not.

There is one chapter about buffet centerpieces but it's a whole baked salmon covered in cucumbers and dill sprigs. There are no "menus" or party themes to make a real buffet, it's just recipes. You have to figure out the buffet part and assembly yourself. Pass on this one. If you want more of a gourmet buffet style, try The Gourmet Potluck: Show-Stopping Recipes for the Buffet Table.
