This is just a fantastic album from a band who sound utterly comfortable with who they are and where they're going. Gorgeous melodies, sharp lyrics, this is music to day dream to grinning stupidly as much as it is music to revel in and curse the reality that there's nothing coming from UK that gets close to this quality. Influences abound - 80s indie darlings House of Love can be heard in the title track and Bitte Bitte and as with their previous work the spectre of Chills genius and fellow Kiwi Martin Phillips looms in the background. But anyone charmed by Beta Band and Steve Mason's solo stuff will love this, as would fans of Super Furry Animals at their very best (i.e Phantom Power). And then theirs smatterings of Pink Floyd, Beatles, Flaming Lips, Smiths...but like all great bands influences and nothing more. Buffalo has the stamp of originality to it, the kind that comes with relative geographic isolation.

The Phoenix Foundation have finally arrived in the UK - get this then work your backwards through their previous three albums - every one essential listening and with its own character. They're also currently on tour - supposedly as good live as they are recorded. So what's left to say - top draw stuff from a band whose day has finally arrived.

I'm fairly certain I heard about The Phoenix Foundation and "Buffalo" from a review in The Sunday Times Culture section. That is often enough for me to buy a CD without having to listen to a few tracks first.

I have to say "Buffalo" is a brilliant album and I've listened to many, many times since I bought it a few weeks ago. It's very mellow but not to the point of being background music. The songs have strong (but subtle) melodies and the lyrics are great too.

My CD also came with a free code to use to download another of their albums (Pegasus). I duly did as suggested and I have to say, Pegasus is probably equally good, if not a smidgeon more so, than Buffalo.

I'm thoroughly enjoying Buffalo and I think you will too. Especially if you like melancholic indie guitar pop.

Enjoy.

This is a truly excellent album. There isn't one weak track. Every song is extremely melodic, the arrangements are interesting and use of instruments on different tracks is unusual and surprising, without the quirkiness that seems to bedevil so many current UK groups. Vocals are great and all in all this is one of the best albums of the year - if not the best

Saw them on Later With Jules Holland performing Buffalo and bought the CD. Excellent, every track a good one. This is a very talented and original band. I'm surprised I hadn't heard of them.
