    After much research I went for the Buffalo 0.5TB LinkStation from Amazon. Thus far I'm very impressed.

    Set up was a breeze, I installed the NAS Navi software on both our laptops and set the linkstation to Auto and it turns on when we power up the laptops (not instantly I might add, but it gets there). Adding extra shared folders etc was easy as was setting up the drive for external web access.

    I read lots of reviews of NAS drives and the Buffalo was the only one that didn't seem to have major drawbacks (getting too hot, only FAT32 etc etc).

    Oh, and Amazon was by far the cheapest source.

    5/5 for me!

    Very neat and well made. Easy to install providing plenty of storage on the network. So far I've only used it as a filestore so can't comment on the iTunes or bitTorrent capability.

    Overall, very pleased but with a couple of small disappointments.

    SPEED
    =====
    Did some write tests and a 130MB file was transferred in 14sec which works out at 80 mbps. As a comparison, writing the same file locally on my PC takes 4sec. Obviously, my 100M network was a bottleneck so I spent more money upgrading it and the the PCs to gigabit. I redid the test and was very disappointed to see it still take 14secs. So the write limit is the NAS, not the network. Reading is better, but even on Gigabit this only gets to around 180Mbps.

    So be prepared for the performance and don't rush out to upgrade your network based on it's 'Gigabit' credentials.

    POWER
    =====
    I was hoping to make use of the auto power-down. The box makes a big deal of the NAS being 'ECO Minded'. It has a switch on the back which can be switched to OFF, ON or AUTO. Reading the manual in detail, I found that the AUTO only works if the NAS is connected directly to your PC. To me this defeats the point of a NAS - you'd be better off with a USB drive (cheaper and faster). If you leave it on a network on AUTO then it will power-down when not used okay but can't receive the wake up signal. So to bring it back to life you have to use the switch on the back to turn it OFF and then ON. So the AUTO is pretty pointless and that pretty much destroys Buffalo's 'ECO Minded' claim.

    I like this product. First you load the CD (I normally hate doing this because you get loads of software that you don't want) then plug the unit into your router. The software detects the drive and that's it.

    We use XP so I used Windows Explorer to map a folder on the Buffalo to a drive letter, but I guess Vista will have something similar. So far so good. We've now got the regular C: hard disk, D: and E: for DVDs and N: for the network drive.

    It gets better though: we have another desktop that has a wireless connection to the router and we have a laptop. No need to load any special software on these, I just used Windows Explorer to map the folder on the Buffalo to a drive letter so they can read/write to N: too. I put all my files into this folder so now I can get at them whichever computer I happen to be using (we have children so there's often competion for any particular computer.)

    It gets even better: I tried the Memeo software but didn't like it and downloaded some free synchronisation software called Allway sync. I created a new folder on the buffalo, mapped this to a new drive letter (Z: to avoid confusion) and now all the PCs keep an up-to-date copy of all the documents that are on all our accounts on all the PCs on the Buffalo. So if a PC dies, we still have all the data, but just in regular files, not some massive backup file. The syncronisation takes a few seconds (after the very first one) not hours.

    Even better: what if the Buffalo dies? Well we plugged a USB drive into the Buffalo and this can be seen as yet another drive by all the PCs on the network just by using Windows Explorer again to map the drive. Every few hours Allway sync syncronises the files between the Buffalo and the USB drive so everything that is on the Buffalo is automatically copied on to the USB drive; if either drive dies, we still have all our data.

    All this runs quietly in the background and doesn't seem to slow down any of the computers significantly, but it's made our system much more flexible and taken away much of our concern about the loss of several years of photos and office files that have gradually built up.

    There are other fancy features like internet access (haven't used it, scares me witless), a print server (don't need it, the printer is already network ready), permissions control (we're a family so we share), FTP server (?) and Apple stuff which some may find useful.

    I should add that we're not particularly speed hungry - we mostly use Microsoft Office products and the internet (rarely for video) and no gaming so 500GB is a LOT of data for us. In the past 10 years we've only managed to accumulate 50Gbytes - but even this much would need several DVDs now, so backing up this way is far less labour intensive.

    So in summary, this is a really useful item especially with the additonal USB drive, but I'd stay away from Memeo backup and use Allway sync instead.
