5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the box, 22 Nov 2006
By Andy Viking (London, UK) - See all my reviews
After reading some of the reviews here, I was a little worried about this device doing what I needed - central storage of all things musical, video, photographic and anything else that needed a safe place to live. Plus of course a print server etc.

I must say that I have been very impressed so far. Very quick and easy to set up. I linked it up on a direct gigabit network to my pc, and have it running wirelessly across the house on a Super G network. Data access is fast - more than adequate for my needs anyway, the print server works well and I have no complaints. The only down side I can think of is that any USB hard drive seems to need to be formatted throught the Buffalo to be properly recognised.

All in all, a great purchase. If you cost up the alternative for a 300GB hard drive, gigabit network connectivity, USB network print server etc. it seems a simple decision to me

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple to use with good IT support, 12 Aug 2006
By Mr. R. Burden (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having purchased previous items from differing suppliers for my home network, I prepared myself for a long-slog of installing the the Linstation Home Server - indeed on the first attempt this proved to be impossible, with the initial part of the setup running smoothly but then my PC not recognising the existence of the drive - a call to the Buffalo helpdesk led to 15mins of diagnostics over the phone with the end conclusion that the actual hard drive was faulty. An email was duely sent with all the details from Buffalo with some requests for sreial no's etc and an email cover letter provided to return to amazon.

Within two days of notifying Amazon that I was returning the device a new one had been delivered (before the other had been actually physically sent back). 5 minutes after opening the box and connecting the whole thing was up and running - the easiest installation I have ever carried out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Very Nice piece of kit - Strongly Recommended, 8 Jun 2006
By StrayDog (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Bought this a few days ago. Installation is easy:
1) Plug into your router and switch on.
2) Give a name to your server by browsing to the configuration page from your PC.
3) The linkstation becomes visible on your network with the name you've chosen and you can map drives or search for it in the 'computers near me' area or using the run command, just like another PC would do.

Haven't tried FTP or print server, but I read somewhere that multifunction printers aren't supported.
In order to connect to the linkstation (you can do that from any PC on your network), you need to allow ZoneAlarm or your firewall to allow to connect to it.
The backup software supplied is good, but you don't need to use it really, as it needs your PC to be on when you schedule backups. Just use the built-in backup feature of the linkstation, which doesn't require anything other then the linkstation and the target drive to be on. You would need to attach a USB disk to the rear port of the linkstation and have the linkstation format the disk for you. When this is done, you have another drive available on the network, which you can use for backups or as additional storage. Just be aware that the linkstation formats the drive in FAT32 format, which I understand has a limit for each file of 2GB, which doesn't make it suitable for DVD disk images.
There are other features like scheduled shutdowns, share creation and DLNA compatibility.
This item however well deserves five star and I am very happy of my purchase.
