The Buffalo DriveStation 1TB is about as simple and straightforward as external storage could be - it's about the size of a thick paperback with a smallish external mains adaptor built into the plug. There's a single USB-B port on the back and a socket to fix a security tether to stop the whole thing going walkies. There's no ON/OFF switch as the drive just switches on and off with your computer or device - if you want to switch it off manually you just un-mount the drive or disconnect the USB cable. Speaking of USB cables, ignore Amazon's 'Related items' above which have been suggesting mini-B cables - it needs a full-sized version like the AmazonBasics USB A-Male to B-Male Cable and there's a short one (about 1m long) in the box so you don't need to buy anything extra, unless you need the extra length.

The drive arrives formatted as a FAT32 volume, so it will work straight away with both Windows and Mac computers, but you can easily reformat to more flexible formats if you plan to use it with only one platform. There's a Windows-only drive management package on the drive which lets you customise settings and add features, but this is optional. The manual also says there's a Mac app included but there isn't (just an empty folder called 'Mac') but everything you're likely to need is already built into OSX.

I was looking for as quiet a drive as possible and I think I found it. With no onboard fan the only sound you hear is the drive spinning and this is mostly a quiet whirring. The heads are also relatively quiet - they do make a low-pitched tapping sound while busy but compared to many drives it's quite unobtrusive.

Bought this a couple of months ago now [about three actually] and have found the device so easy to use and reliable. It looks good, stores away easy and backs-up the files i want to keep safe. I do not use it as an every day device but as a back-up storage system and so far it works for me. Whenever i have had to retrieve data it has been there and the easy connection to the computer is extremely helpful, especially for someone with bad hands like myself. All together i would say this is a reliable piece of kit at a very reasonable price. If i need another 1TB then i will purchase another of these.

I purchased this to store all my photos, a whole scheme of work for school along with a lot of important documents. I plugged in, it worked straight away , was VERY quick to save huge documents and I have still got about 75% of capacity left! An excellent price compared to others available from computer stores and it came the next day. Brilliant.

I bought the Buffalo HDD to provide "Pause" or "Rewind Live TV" for my Panasonic TX-L32D25BA television.
Reading reviews it seemed to do well and this brand was cited as not giving any problems interfacing with a Panasonic TV.
It arrived ready to interface with a PC (I have XP Pro) so I tried it first with that. All worked perfectly.
I attached it to the TV as per instructions and, having warned me about re-formatting and non-intechangeability with anything else (which I expected to be told - it is all in the manual), it then worked exactly as described. The whole process controllable from the TV remote and non-technical users not needing to get involved with the Humax at all for the "Pause TV" facility.
You can also set it to record a programme using the TV's tuner and the TV in standby which I suppose is a possibility should you ever be in the situation of wanting to record a third programme when not at home or home but not wanting to watch any of the three programmes while present.
The drive is "silent". That is you are not aware of it running unless you press your ear to it.
I was so impressed with the drive that I bought another one, 15 days later, for the PC as, although this has 160Gb and a 250Gb drives, I had no external hard drive backup. With all my .mpg .bmp .wav and .mp3 files on it, there is still a huge capacity remaining. Only downside was that it had gone up £10 in the interim! Still, that is the state of hard drive availability at present (Nov-Dec 2011)
One point worth mentioning. When I connected the first drive to the PC I disallowed the auto run file but, reading the paperwork, it said it contained 3 .pdf manual files. So I ran the self-extracing .exe file, saved the .

Looking at the reviews for many of the external hard drives for sale on Amazon and elsewhere I notice that up to 20% of them are failing soon after purchase - anything from a few months to a few seconds after switching them on - and, most alarmingly, people are losing data in the process.

It's important to realise that any disk drive can (and will) fail at any time after purchase whether it's minutes, months or years down the line so never put important data all on one drive or in one place for that matter.

I have a couple of Buffalo 1Tb drives at work, one in an upstairs room, one downstairs, each is a copy of the other so two sets of idntical data (incidently, these have been no trouble and are relatively cheap drives so I've given them a 5 star review). If one of the drives fails (which it will sooner or later) then I have a second copy of the data to backup from. This is the absolute minimum arrangement you should consider, two drives in two different places with the same data on them. Even this is risky for important data - what if the building burns down or an electrical storm fries both drives simultaneously?

Another thing to consider is physical shock to the drive - DO NOT MOVE OR KNOCK THE DRIVE WHEN IT'S SWITCHED ON! I have two drives at home, I accidently knocked one off it's perch from where it has sat happily for the last 18 months and it hit the floor (a fall of just 30cm and a Freecom 1Tb XS rubber coated drive at that) and it will never work again! Find a place to put the drive where it won't get bashed around and leave it there. Even if you are using a 'portable drive' then makes sure it's switched off before you move it around - in my experience even so called 'robust' drives just aren't.

I hope the above is useful to those considering external drives for backing up important data - expect them to fail sooner or late and have another copy of the data for safe keeping.
