This has worked effortlessly and just runs with no problems using FW 6pin , upload time was no problem - my wife got a Western Digital and the upload time is appalling

4.0 out of 5 stars Good solid drive. Very quiet 17 Aug 2010

So quiet ... it's easy to forget it's on. Lot's of connections. Note - usb connection, eSata and firewire. Good performance with Avid Media Composer, even with mini usb connection.

1.0 out of 5 stars No end of issues 19 May 2012

I've spent a week trying to get this drive to work (Windows 7) and have finally given up, i've reformated it, changed the file system, used it with different PCs and cables, including Firewire, USB and eSata the drive disconnects when in use or just randomly no matter what I do, if you have a Windows 7 PC i'd stay away from this product.

Nice external drive. Does what it should and looks good doing it. Could be a little smaller but this is probs due to all the ports.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor customer service 29 Mar 2012

The 2 out of 5 stars is based on my individual experience with the compatibility of the Drive with Vista and my experience of Buffalo customer service. If it had worked as described by being properly supported on the Vista OS, I would have given a higher rating. It has a lot of features and there probably wouldn't have been an issue with Windows 7 as Firewire 800 is now supported.

I use my laptop for music and needed an external hard drive for audio data and it was claimed that this hard drive fully supports Firewire 800 1394b on Windows Vista 32 bit.

Buffalo customer support isn't very good if you get issues with their products. The Firewire 800 didn't work with my Dell Vista laptop and they blamed it on hardware. After nearly 3 months, I have found the answer and it is software/drivers. Buffalo claimed that it supported Firewire 800 1394b on Windows Vista. However, I have discovered that Vista doesn't support Firewire 800 with it's drivers/adaptors and they will only support the Firewire 400 data rate. I have only just been able to get it to work at Firewire 800 rates by using all non Windows drivers and adaptors. It is possible (though not easy) to get a Firewire 800 external hard drive to work with the Unibrain drivers. I did get Firewire 800 to work with the hard drive eventually.

However, as the Unibrain drivers do not support audio A/V, it isn't possible to use a music interface on the same pci express port. Having a laptop for music, this means that I have to use native Windows drivers for Vista whose driver adaptors only work at the firewire 1394a 400 rate.
