Product Description

Product Description

'BUFFALO AIRWAYS - Diamonds, DC-3s and 'Buffalo Joe' McBryan' will leave you on the edge of your seat...breathless with anticipation and awe! Experience the true-life adventure where heroic young pilots are recruited to fly World War Two airplanes in the most extreme conditions on earth under the demanding, watchful eye of legendary aviator 'Buffalo Joe' McBryan.

Written by critically-acclaimed Author, retired pilot and former Buffalo Airways flight crew member, Darrell Knight.

Includes 48 stunning photographic images of DC-3, DC-4 and C-46 Commando 'warbird' propliners in present-day use.

Read how the young flyers and aircraft engineers from Buffalo Airways brave minus forty degree temperatures, engine failures and seemingly-impossible demands from expeditors and the airline's owner to bring food, fuel and freight from civilization to remote, isolated settlements high above the Arctic circle in lovingly-restored vintage aircraft.

Fly along in the cockpit with these seat-of-the-pants aviators as they battle adverse weather, wing icing, runaway propellers, damaged engines, propeller strikes and dangerously-thin melting ice runways.

Darrell Knight is also the author of "Pete Knight - The Cowboy King" and "Artillery Flyers at War", both available in hardcover and paperback editions.

I'm a huge fan of the Ice Pilots NWT TV series which follows the exploits of Buffalo Airways in the Northwest Territories of Canada. This book is a personal account of life at Buffalo in earlier years by a former pilot flying WWII-era aircraft in and out of improvised airfields in demanding conditions.

The authors stories give a vivid account of the hard work and long hours required of Buffalo's aviators but also give an insight into the personal rewards and just why they would go to such lengths in conditions as harsh as an NWT winter.

This book is an essential read for all fans of the Ice Pilots show and is recommended to anyone with an interest in the demands of flying classic aircraft in the north.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buffalo airways 19 Jun 2014

Keen follower of TV series Ice Pilots and the background information in this is useful to see how the airline progressed to the position it now has. Sometime in the future the old planes will have to go so will the airline be the same or will it just become another small airline with nothing remarkable about it, only time, and Buffalo Joe know the answer to that.

This is like a book version of TVs Ice Pilots !.
These guys risked there live daily flying from Yellowknife out into the wilderness.
I still can't figure out, with the old aircraft they were flying, how the never got lost ????.
Not a bad book, but a little too much "hero worship" for some of the older pilots.

A great read about the day to day life of pilots flying in the far north in the planes that were the work horse that was used in World War 2.

A great insight into the world of buffalo airways, a hint of fondness by the author with some added humour recollecting his days of flying for this amazing airline. The reader is also shown another side to ' buffalo joe ' , one which you rarely see on the tv cameras.
Well worth a read not just for aviation enthusiasts but also for fans of the tv show.

Whilst this book was a good read to me it did not hit the right spot, it was lacking in cohesion and seemed to jump around to much to make it a 'can't put it down' type of book
