I've tried numerous wireless routers Belkin F5D7230-4,Netgear RangeMax™ with Smart MIMO and Lynksys WRT54GS v5.1. None of them performed as it was mentioned. All of them had problems with keeping the DNS settings and signal power. As soon as the encryption was turned on, the broadband was feeling like a dial-up.
But the Buffalo AirStation was quick to setup and performs as it's mentioned and also got excellent signal power compared to all the above mentioned routers. Excellent value for money and exceeds the expectations.
I have recently bought the Buffalo Airstation as a Router for my Telewest broadband. After a few teething problems getting the router to work I am now enjoying secure internet useage throughout my flat. I would recommend this router to those user who have cable or DSL broadband such as Telewest. It works automatically so there is no installing needed although the trick I found was to turn all the equipment off (Modem; Router; Computer) and then turn them on in that order making sure all loadup protocol loaded before moving onto next step. Perfect for the novice or expert Broadband user!
I'm very impressed with this wireless router, which arrived three days earlier than the estimated delivery date (thank you, Amazon). I was very nervous about setting it up, as I've never set up a wireless network, and had read a number of reviews here which suggested this router is difficult to configure. Ultimately, the only difficult part of setting it up was actually getting down on the floor, connecting and securing various cables, and re-arranging the equipment - I'm an arthritis sufferer, so that bit was painful.
As for the actual router set-up - it virtually sets itself up. I didn't use the set-up CD. I simply followed the instructions in the paper documentation, and navigated to the set-up page, via my web browser. Within minutes, I'd enabled the strongest encryption with a 63 character key I'd prepared in advance, changed the SSID to prevent it broadcasting my MAC address, and enabled the firewall.
This router delivers a very strong signal all over my flat - even through solid stone walls. The only minor blip I've had with it, was when a cordless phone interfered with the connection speed. After relocating the phone, the router bounced back up to speed again.
Anyone who has connection or speed problems with this router, really needs to consider what other wave-emitting devices they have in the immediate vicinity, and to also check their computer's settings. Although I'm an experienced computer user, I've never set up a network before, and had none of the problems highlighted by other users here. I'd suggest that anyone considering going wireless should do a little research first, and familiarise themselves with the basics and terminology of setting up a network and securing it. Then, when the equipment arrives, set-up won't be so daunting. If all purchasers do this, the documentation provided will be more than adequate.
All in all, I would recommend this wireless router wholeheartedly. It's easy to set up, it's reliable and powerful - what more could you want?Read more ›
Bought this to replace a dodgy Linksys router that kept dropping my VOIP and IPSEC connections. Don't really need the wireless but the attraction was it supports alternative open source firmwares that would allow more control if the stock firmware wasn't up to the job.
And it wasn't: It was impossible to configure port-forwarding with the supplied firmware (take note) so, sooner than expected I reflashed with "tomato". Setup with this of the basic features was easier and more flexible and it supports outbound QoS, which while not easy to configure is optional.
Compared to any of the routers i've used (quite a few, including the ubiquitous linksys wrt54g) this is by far the superior.
Coupled with Tomato firmware (check the wiki) it has solved months of misery in our house where 5 people share a 2mb connection!
It has democracised the internet... we all use bittorrent, i play games (css, cod4, etc) and we are able to surf comfortably using Tomato's uber-advanced QOS settings which prioritse connections by port ranges (in and outbound). Lets face it torrents can wait when its dissertation season!!
