Book Description

Buddy Holly is the best-known yet most elusive and enigmatic of all Rock 'n' Roll legends. Now Philip Norman, who has won international praise for his biographies of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Elton John, has written the definitive story of a short but extraordinary life. Buddy's records are played, and his memory is cherished, the world over. Yet the full story of his meteoric rise and tragic fall has never been told. Philip Norman uses his unique skills to give a revealing, sometimes shocking but always warmly affectionate portrait of America's mythical Rock 'n' Roll era and its brightest and most enduring star. 'excellent . . . [Norman's] cogency and thoroughness make this biography as welcome as the unstoppably fresh songs his idol left us' Sunday Times

About the Author

Well written book, well researched and presented in an interesting way.
The story leaves you feeling like you knew Buddy Holly on a one to one basis.
The tragic death of Buddy and the relentless fraud of his producer/manager Norman Petty add the drama aspect.
The 1950's life style in West Texas seem like a remote planet compared to todays
consumer based world.Buddy's emotional endeavours are well documented.Buddy Holly was and still is a great influence on music today. This book takes you through his short but eventfull life.
Well done Phillip Norman great book.

But for a change of laundry Buddy might have given even more to the world. If you like Buddy the book is damn good, so good it may make you fume with anger. To add more could spoil your reading so I won't.

The work and research that has gone into this biography demonstrates clearly the authors love of Buddy Holly and his music. There are a few 'Americanisms' dotted through the book, but for a UK reader this does not distract or spoil what is a great tribute biography.

Buddy the person, bounces out of the pages as a person with a great gift and a determined character, but the book also shows Buddy's imperfections and mistakes which helps the reader know and understand him in a very intimate manner.

Historical dates, places, names and times are all included and I would say that this is probably as near to the real truth of Buddy's life that you will ever get.

The relationship with Norman Petty is an integral and important part of the book and the life of Buddy, and I find myself wondering if Buddy would have ever been successful without this symbiotic relationship with his recording manager. Certainly the 'sound' of those fantastic records was something that owes much to the time and the effort that Norman Petty the perfectionist, put into recording those hit records.

I loved the book which marches along without a pause for breath and puts the reader via a time warp, in the studio and on the road with Buddy Holly and The Crickets.

I was twelve when Buddy died and news reports on his death at the time were sketchy to say the least. I have always loved his music and been aware of his influence on popular music, but knew very little about him. This book has put all that right, taking the reader from his early life right through to actually sitting next to him on the plane on that fateful night. I now feel that I not only know the man but like and respect him.

In what should be the last word re Buddy Holly the book is a good read and a potted history of the times.
In retrospect Holly-who hoped to make albbums of most other styles of music-was the progenitor for 60s high school pop and paved the way for Bobby Vee who was to have a solid link with the Crickets.
Though he could never have imagined it Holly even today is a massive influence.

This is a great book. Sets into context why Buddy Holly surprisingly struggled to get great success in his life time. Clovis man's actions are finally brought to book. Would still like to know who controls what as the complete buddy holly box set released over 20 years ago as vynl is still not out on CD.
