Review

This is a well written and beautifully illustrated account of the life of one the greatest figures of antiquity. Alexander III of Macedon, known to history and myth as Alexander the Great, reigned for only 13 years and died at the age of 32. In that short span, however, he subdued Thebes, became master of Syria and finally conquered the whole Persian Empire. He founded the great city of Alexandria on the Nile Delta and built military schools throughout his lands. He was on the verge of launching an assault on Arabia when fever and sudden death cut short one of the most dazzling and brilliant of careers. Fildes and Fletcher tell this story together with a vivid account of Alexander's personal life, including the antagonistic relations with his father King Philip and his marriage to 'Roxane the Fair', daughter of the Bactrian nobleman Oxyartes. The authors are learned, up to date, and concise, while their brief guide to further reading makes this an excellent introduction to the subject. Moreover, the numerous photographs, maps and images reproduced in full colour amount to a splendid production: a delight to behold as well as a pleasure to read. Product Description

Buddhism has given immeasurable riches to the West - a collection of profound and life-enhancing ideas, a host of beautiful works of art (from statues of the Buddha to Zen gardens) and a repertoire of spiritual practices (from mantras to mindfulness) that can change all our lives for the better. Buddhist Inspirations offers a beautiful illustrated distillation of Buddhist belief, practice and art. Generously furnished with superb photographs and specially commissioned artworks as well as enlightening quotations from the sacred texts, the book presents a fascinating kaleidoscope of all aspects of Buddhism, including Tantra, Zen and the Pure Land beliefs of Japan. The emphasis throughout is on the wisdom, healing power and beauty of Buddhism and on its abundant relevance to those in the West who seek an alternative to secular materialism. A perfect gift for anyone who hears the call of the spirit.

As the previous reviewer said this book is beautiful and would make a excellent first introduction to Buddhism. I would go further and say that it is perfect for children aged 8+ and would be great book to have in schools.

My only concern is that is rather short- more than half of the 160 pages are taken up by pictures. As such for lots of big topics you just get little introductory paragraphs. It would be easy to find this and better information online so I wouldn't say it was worth buying the book for the content- I'd recommend Buddhism For Dummies (For Dummies (Lifestyles Paperback)) or Buddhism: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions) instead.

P.S. Looking back at the book having written this I discovered a second concern: the section on the Three Characteristics of Existence is unclear and also gave me the impression that this formula originated with Ananda Maitreya, the 20th century Theravadin, rather than with the Buddha himself (which is what the other sources I've seen imply).

The information presented here is a very basic, simple introduction to Buddhism. The beauty of the book is in its rich, colourful artwork and the simplicity of its explanations. It is an ideal first book explaining the history, ethos, practices and symbolism of Buddhism, although if you already have some knowledge and are researching further, you would be disappointed. This is one to whet your appetite and delight the eye. It would also be a good book for explaining Buddhism to others.

True to it's title, this book is very inspiring and enlightening. It is beautifully illustrated and I enjoyed reading it very much. The longer I live, the more I aspire to be more kind and understanding. I agree with the core philosophy "Harm no thing".
