Product Description

These 2CDs contain contemporary and accessible recordings of spiritual chants which have, since ancient times, been used to aid and enhance meditation. From a Chinese tradition they feature some of the most important works found throughout the Buddhist world, including Om-Ma-Ni-Bay-May-Hon - typically translated as The Jewel In The Lotus . For listening pleasure or meditation practice, these 2 discs provide exactly what you need. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

I listen a great deal to mantras and to collaborations between chanting and Eastern or Western derived music. Although, in this case, the mantras used are chiefly Sanskrit, the collection has a distinctly Chinese quality, in terms of the music style, the accents, and at one point, the language. The collection is broad, across two CDs, and I have found tracks which are both a fresh presentation of mantras commonly available in this format (eg to Avalokitesvara, and to Amitabah buddha), and a creative interpretation using more traditional Chinese music. The CD is in this way both useful to those practicing meditation (or its various forms, eg in Yoga, Tai-Chi) and for those who seek peace and solace on their iPods and home stereos. The collection may also appeal to those who enjoy traditional Chinese melody and instrumentation, although some examples of this (in common with the genre) were to me a little saccharine. Fully committed practitioners of pureland may find several tunes here that help aid their focus, along with some other tunes which have a refreshingly jolly approach.

Although I'm not religious I have had a soft spot for Buddhist music for quite a few years. This 2 CD set is perfect to unwind to and relax to. Because you get 2 CDs this might be better value for money than buying just a single CD or 2 single CDs.

This CD was not what I was expecting sadly. I would not describe the vocals as chanting, it is most definitely singing, albeit singing Buddhist sutra excerpts, mostly in Mandarin (only a few seem to be sung in Sanskrit). The traditional Chinese music for me really seems to detract from the more serious aspect of the content- i.e. religious sutras aimed at helping one work towards enlightenment although I can understand why some people might prefer a "lighter" edge. If it had been more clear what type of music, and singing was on the CD I mightn't have been so disappointed. I think this music is more suitable for general relaxation on a light level, some people may find it suitable for Reiki but I would not use it in my own practice. Some people might like to have this music on whilst doing yoga or pilates. In case any readers are wondering about my background and any relevance to my review, I am a Mahayana Buddhist disciple in training for lay priesthood; I'm also a Reiki master-teacher, holistic therapist, and qualified FE lecturer. I hope that anyone choosing to purchase this CD enjoys it for what it is :)
