A Buddhist Bible,
By
This review is from: A Buddhist Bible (Wordsworth Classics of World Literature) (Paperback)
The 'Buddhist Bible consists of the 'Lankavatara Sutra', a thirteen chapter book which influenced early Zen/Chan Buddhism, and takes the form of a Buddhist master instructing his pupils through discourse. The chapters have titles like 'Discrimination', 'The Mind-System', 'Self-Realisation' and 'Tathagatahood which is Noble Wisdom'.
Next is the 'Diamond Sutra' (22 pages) and the 'Sutra of Transcendental Wisdom' (2 pages), which are important texts in the Mahayana Buddhist tradition. 'The Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch' is a book of nine chapters consisting of lectures on subjects such as repentance, the three bodies of Buddha, and prajna, by a Chinese Buddhist master. The final book in 'A Buddhist Bible' is 'The Light of Asia', a long Victorian poem of 122 pages by Sir Edwin Arnold, which tells the story of the Buddha's life. As someone who knows little about Buddhism, I was looking for an introduction to its ideas, writings and philosophy. I found this book difficult to learn from in this respect, and I imagine it would be of interest to those with a more advanced understanding of what Buddhism is all about. It is excellent value at the price, if the material is of interest to you.
