Product Description

Product Description

In his tv programmes William Woollard has established a firm reputation for his ability to take difficult and often obscure bits of science and make them immediately interesting and accessible to the average listener. In this book he does very much the same thing for Buddhism and what it has to offer in a modern context. His theme is really happiness. So he takes us on a journey to unravel what it is that makes us feel good about ourselves and our lives and our relationships. On the way he reveals the fascinating conjunction that has now emerged between the classical teachings of Buddhism, and the latest findings from today's sociologists, and psychologists and neuroscientists, about who we are, and what really makes us happy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Done William, 4 April 2011
This review is from: Buddhism and the Science of Happiness: A Personal Exploration of Buddhism in Today's World (Paperback)
This book follows on from where William Woollard left off in "The Reluctant Buddhist". Here the author briefly describes some exciting developments in modern psychology / sociology noting how closely this new science, which the author has called The Science of Happiness, mirrors Buddhist philosophies that were first espoused over 2500 years ago. If you are non-Buddhist, not a psychologist or not a sociologist - don't worry - this book is set at a level that should appeal to all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fundamental truth and a warm positive glow, 2 July 2011
This review is from: Buddhism and the Science of Happiness: A Personal Exploration of Buddhism in Today's World (Paperback)
I was recommended this book by a friend as part of the current discussion on measuring happiness vs. wealth, while Buddhism has always fascinated me, although I have never studied it in detail. Well, the book certainly blew all my preconceptions of Buddhism away and left me with an even greater wonder at the mystery and power of the human mind. The book left me with the feeling that I had not just learned something valuable, but a fundamental truth had been revealed. The enthusiasm of the author shines throughout and this plus the underlying message that we can all change and build the mental strength to think positively despite what life throws at us left me with a warm positive glow. In fact, so much so, that I picked the book up again after a week and read it a second time to get another fix.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buddhism and the Science of Happiness: A Personal Exploration of Today's World, 6 April 2011
This review is from: Buddhism and the Science of Happiness: A Personal Exploration of Buddhism in Today's World (Paperback)
If you are interested in learning about Buddhism and looking for a gentle introduction to the philosophy and practice, I thoroughly recommend this book. William Woollard's writing style flows beautifully, making the book so easy to read but difficult to put down: it's as if he were sitting next to you having a friendly chat about Buddhism...
I shall probably read it again!
