Having recently started attending meditation classes organised by Buddhists I wanted to know more about this religion. I have read or looked at a number of books which have helped - but only up to a point. With totally new concepts and at times a new language it has proved very difficult to grasp and understand. But I have wanted to learn more and this book at last explains everything in clear unambiguous language. It is set out in a way that enables you to seek out the bits that you want explaining without necessarily having read the previous chapter(s). And you can dip in to other parts as you progress with learning more about Buddhism from other sources. It is an excellent book for people like me who want know more and understand Buddhism better. I only wish I had found it earlier!

I bought this book for my wife and we've both found it very useful and entertaining. My wife is relatively new to Buddhism and I've been a Buddhist for more than 20 years and it works for both of us; sufficient detail and reminders for me and enough detail for her to gain greater understanding and pursue more of the dharma from here.

The authors are very knowledgeable and write in an entertaining and approachable style.

Does make learning about buddhism easier than most books. I find it easier to pick out different bits. Alot to work through cover to cover. But it does cover all aspects so just what you need to help you understand its origins and what a peaceful attitude to life it gives

This is a great book, spent over a couple of hours reading it in a library. I learn a great deal, despite being a Buddhist for many years now. The book puts everything in simple language so that you don't get bogged down by technical terms. I am learn about Buddhism of other schools too, I am a Gelug Tibetan Buddhist and didn't know much about great leaders of other tradition. This book provides a few great leaders from other schools, which are inspiring. I am thinking of buying this book now..

This is a well-written and informative book whick packs a lot of information between its covers. For me, looking only for a general overview of the key aspects of Buddhism, there was too much information and more detailed/"technical" than I needed. I suspect though that its a book I'll go back to and dip into from time to time, and it is undoubtedly good value for money.

Forget Dummies! And dummy I am not, so I should have been able to cope! This book is a detailed introduction to the subject, going much further than I could cope with as a beginner. I can't fault it in terms of the detail it gives - but I confess I had to give up, after failing to digest and understand much of the content. What was difficult was being exhorted to practices which, as a beginner, I couldn't begin to understand or implement - severe indigestion! I'll come back to this book as and when I have a better understanding. Meanwhile I'll stick with Buddhism Plain and Simple, and Buddhism Without Beliefs.

I was interested in finding out a bit more about Buddhism and wanted to find a book that explained it in terms that didn't make it complicated. The ability to look inside the book online swayed me to purchase it and I've not been disappointed. It can be read cover to cover or dipped into as required. Its not a book that tries to sell you Buddhism, it just explains it in laymans language and also gives an insight into what life as a Buddhist can be like. It also applies it to everyday situations which is quite interesting.
It has certainly whetted my appetite to find out more and it's been a good foundation to my investigations which I find myself returning to in order to clarify anything I don't understand.
Well worth it.

This is an ideal beginner's guide to Buddhism. It explains all the key elements and teachings of the Buddha in an easily understood way. Most importantly, it covers all schools of Buddhism and although I have been a practicing Buddhist for over 27 years I still find myself using it for references when preparing talks. Occasionally, I am asked to recommend a book for a total beginner and I give them my copy of Buddhism for Dummies and I buy another. I think I am on copy number 6.
