Review

"A practical, inspirational piece for our uncertain times, it lends itself perfectly to Nicholas Bell's soothing, familiar voice." (Australian Bookseller+Publisher)

"Michie demystifies the ancient teachings of Buddha, and writes about them in an easy style." (The Sunday Mail)

"For those who have been searching for a sincere, accessible introduction to Tibetan Buddhism ... this is your book ... Michie employs storytelling and humor without being falsely enthusiastic or superficial." (Shambhala Sun)

"David Michie ... describes [the Tibetan Buddhist] inner path to a more peaceful and rounded life." (Spirituality and Practice)

A novelist and former Type A executive offers a touching memoir about how Tibetan Buddhism transformed his life. Anesthetized by the mind’s internal chatter and the temporary pleasures of modern life, many people overlook the freedom they have to choose their internal reactions to life’s insults and tragedies. They’re trapped by their habits and appetites, oppressed by the impulse to control everything. With his nuanced phrasing and perfectly natural diction, British actor Nicholas Bell adds enormous appeal to this elegant personal lesson. His understated vocal presence, combined with the author’s humility and practical grasp of his subject, gives the production irresistible charm and accessibility. This beautifully rendered, beguiling introduction to meditation and Buddhist thought will help listeners consider realms of being they don’t ordinarily visit. As an IT professional who has worked her whole career in London I could relate to much of David's situation. Successful, yet not able to be complacent, I too enjoyed my very hectic and pressured work life although could see it for the little it was. Twenty years ago like David I found my way to a Buddhist centre in Bethnal Green.

This is a wonderful introduction to Buddhism for all. With a biographical back story David explains Buddhism in a way which is accessible to those with no knowledge and a sympathic read to the initiated.
I have given the book 3 times to friends as a present and it has always been v well received too

I haven't actually finished this book yet....

Having first purchased through Google Playbooks I quickly realised that this book could have a really positive effect on my life and sought out a Kindle Paperwhite and repurchased through Amazon so i could enjoy the reading experience further.....
Like the Author at the time, i am very new to even the idea of Buddhism and given that i come from a very Christian background the notion of Buddhism is somewhat frowned upon in my family. Being a "busy person" myself this book has opened my eyes to home truths and the reality of the world and people around me. This book has certainly given me my "lightbulb" moment, inspiring me to understand that the certain predicaments in life our my own doing and that i have the ability to change things in a positive manner with pretty much immediate effect. Alot of people say there is no such thing as a true quick fix, but having read just 6 chapters, i would beg to differ. This book is my quick fix and has already changed how i live my life, how i react to other people and how i perceive my own struggles. My relationship has astronomically improved, my understanding of my child has become so much better and the running or my business has radically become so much easier. There are obviously 100's of books on Buddhism, which i have obviously not read [yet] but to be honest, i wish that this book could be on the compulsory list for anyone trying to understand and learn about the benefits of the Buddhism faith. Thank you David Michie for opening my eyes and enabling me to improve my life on a permanent basis.

"I read this book in one sitting and it has been re-read and thumbed through many times since. David Michie presents the reader with a modern approach to ancient Buddhist traditions and techniques for taming the 'mad monkey mind' which, with practice, allows clarity of thought and serenity of spirit with which to approach everyday life. David's humour, down to earth common sense and practical guidelines make this a highly readable book, not only for the busy person but for all who aspire to calmer, more compassionate, positive and caring lives. I thoroughly recommend it.

This book gives a useful introduction to Buddhist concepts without drowning the reader in ideology. David Michie writes plainly about how Buddhism worked for him, helped him improve his life, find better health and happiness and then encourages the reader to explore it for themselves. A thoroughly enjoyable read. Highly recommended for anyone who is curious how the philosophy works.

This is a wonderfully written, humorous and thoroughly accessible book. If you would like to find out more about Buddhism and also broaden your perspective of life, Buddhism for Busy People is just the ticket.
David Michie has warmth, great energy and humanity. One of my favourite parts is his description of interdependence - before we have even got out of bed in the morning, we can be thankful for many relationships: the person who made the bolts in the bed, the person who sewed the sheets, the driver who delivered the mattress. It's a reassuring thought (we are all connected!) and a reminder to be grateful.

I have read numerous books on Buddism and bought this more to see styles and approaches on the subject.
What struck me initially was the fluidity, clear style and relationship with the reader that was created.I was not surprised then to see Michie had a passion for writting.(as well as his subject matter)
The book touches you in intellectual and psycholgical places that are unqique.
While some of the stats used are questionable and Karma is a pretty techy subject the book really shook me from existential slumber.
He has great quotes and stories, gets a great balance between heavy and light and thus like a wave the book flows.
This is my first review and hope it helps and gets some people to read a really wonderfull book.

Only after couple of pages into reading this book, I started smiling to myself - although I was in a lot of pain at that time. Reason for the smiling was because I couldn't help myself but very much relate to the experience that the author has gone through: Busy working life, hardly anytime for myself and my family, never pausing even for a second. This book throws your own reality right back at you and encourages you to say 'hang on a minute, what am I doing with my life???'.

I'm so glad I found this book yet at the same time feel sad I only discovered it now. It's been life changing for me. I never read and knew about Buddhism before, and this book gives you the perfect kickstart.

Buy it, read it, laugh and weep with it. You will find so much of your own self in the book, it's going to freak you out. It's never too late to make a self-awareness journey in life, and this book is a great start to encourage you to do so.

Thank you David Michie x
