Product Description

In Afghanistan, thousands of families still live beneath the statue of Buddha destroyed by the Taliban. Baktay (Nikbakht Noruz), a six-year-old Afghan girl, is inspired to go to school by their neighbours' son. On her way to school, she is harassed by boys playing games cruelly mimicking their violent society. Will Baktay be able to overcome these obstacles in order to learn the alphabets of her mother tongue?

5.0 out of 5 stars poetic and thought-provoking, 1 Sep 2008

I saw this film at the cinema tonight, and came away wanting to see it again.

It is the story of the hopes of a small girl who wishes no more than to be able to go to school - no easy feat in traumatised Afghanistan.

The violence-induced scars on the community are there to be seen, shown in the poverty of basic survival and the brutalised local boys who run wild. Set against the backdrop of Bamiyan's destroyed Buddhas, the film takes in the sweeping and dusty landscapes and the harshness of life, but is full of lyricism and poetry, and last but not least, pure human spirit.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Movie on the Plight Even of Young Girls in a Taliban Society, 28 Nov 2008

I think that both the daughters of the Makhmalbáf family (Samira and Hana) are even more gifted as directors than their parents. A few days ago Hana M. was in Stockholm to introduce her new movie, which is an art work of the highest quality. A young girl zealously wants to go to school and learn to read and write. Almost everywhere she is met with hostility or indifference. And it should not go unnoticed that that there is no solidarity within the female sex. When she finally finds the school for girl, all the other girls intentionally move to prevent her from finding anywhere to sit. Also the female teacher soon throws her out of the classroom. On her way home she and other girls are taken as prisoners by boys playing talibans. And what happens then?
The performance of the girl is genuinely impressive throughout the entire movie, and regardless of what mood is predominant in each scene.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most heart breaking & beautiful movie in years!, 10 May 2009
This review is from: Buddha Collapsed Out Of Shame [DVD] (DVD)
This little girl miraculously embodies the human purity - I don't know what kind of human would not be profoundly touched by this story. When you're lucky enough to be born in a democratic country where education is the right and obligation for everyone, we don't even think to appreciate our fortune and we keep on complaining about small things. All through the movie, I wanted to go hug her, offer her everything she needs to go to school, anything she needs to have the best education. I hope the charity organization that I endorse (with my modest donations) are actually helping these innocent children to have the chance to be educated.
This is by far the most heart breaking and most beautiful movie I've seen in years!
