Product Description

Backbench MP Tom Goodfellowe is caught up in the search for the new Dalai Lama in this highly original and compelling thriller from the author of GOODFELLOWE MP and HOUSE OF CARDS – now reissued in new cover style.

Tom Goodfellowe is the unlikeliest of political heroes. An MP whose career has already been consigned to the scrapheap of history, with a private life that staggers between confusion and chaos… And it’s all about to get worse.

A new Dalai Lama is born. The infant god-king of Tibet. And around the child explodes an international conspiracy that will carve a trail of death from the slopes of Mount Everest right to the heart of London’s Chinatown.

Goodfellowe becomes drawn into a murderous race against time and against sinister sources within his own government. On the outcome will hang the fate of one of the world’s great religions – and Goodfellowe’s turbulent personal life. Because someone, someone very close, is betraying him at every turn.

The story dips and changes between various important characters, the significance not becoming apparent until well into the plot. When I started reading I thought this was not my "sort of thing" but by halfway I resented having to put it down. A thriller that also generates a certain sympathy for the 'baddies' towards the end. A very satisfying read.
My husband bought the book originally, and I only picked it up because it was on the shelf, now I'm looking at other titles by this author.

After reading the first book involving our real life 'hero' I couldn't wait for the next installment.I was not dissapointed,as a result of his inside knowledge of the 'biz' and a knack for great story telling Michael Dobbs has come up with another thouroughly enjoyable page-turner.If you liked F.U wait untill you meet Thomas Goodfellowe!

This has an interesting theme of China v Tibet and the influence of both countries in the UK. However the plot never quite has lift-off. There are many good bits, such as Goodfellowe's relationship with his daughter and the Chinese ambassador, as well as the Chinese ambassador and Mo. The journeys of Tibetans to the West are well-told. But somehow they don't tie together properly as a novel, and I had a fair idea of what was going to happen quite early in the book. I also found, as I have found with a couple of his other books, that there is a cynicism about Dobbs' books that makes them rather cold and uninvolving. The humanity of a romance isn't there but nor is the pace of a thriller and I was left, quite often, feeling a bit indifferent.
