Book Description

4 Feb 2010
Growing up in the modern world, our children have to cope with ever-increasing amounts of stress, which can hinder their development. The ancient wisdom of Buddhism, with its emphasis on peace, love and compassion, is the ideal basis for helping any child to face these challenges with inner confidence and calm. Building on the age-old art of storytelling, this beautiful book re-tells 20 ancient Buddhist tales in a way that is thoroughly fun and accessible to children. Featuring superb, full-page illustrations, the stories will transport kids into an imaginary world of enlightenment and discovery where they will meet delightful characters and discover an easy-to-understand Buddhist message - one that will help them think about how they can apply values such as patience, perseverance, honesty and generosity to their own lives. Designed to be read aloud by a parent or read by older children on their own, these compelling narratives provide a pleasurable, soothing transition into sleep.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glorious! 7 Oct 2010
Wow what a fantastic book! Not only does it contain visualisations/meditation advice for you, as a parent to teach your child, but the pictures are absolutely beautiful. The stories are well written and remind me of 'Aesop's Fables' from when I was a nipper! It also teaches them fundamental Buddhist principles like compassion, honesty, generosity, calmness, patience, focus, selflessness and respect for our environment - all such wonderful qualities we should be teaching our kids...can't recommend highly enough, even if you are not following a buddhist path you/your child will love these stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful 17 April 2010
A beautiful book to look at and a very workable format. The stories are engaging and meaningful, the moral of the story at the end is a nice touch and solidifies a lesson. A very nice way for children to think about life and a way to navigate through it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buddha at any time 11 Feb 2011
I brought this lovely book when my grand daughter was born, both myself and her great grand mother have read this book to her since she came to us for 2 days a week at 3 months old. We both love the stories ourselves and now that my grand daughter is 18 months old she gets the book out herself whenever she feels tired, climbs up onto our knee and pops her thumb in ready for her "buddha time."

This beautiful book not only works at bedtime but anytime youre tiny person is finding life a little hard, teething time, chesty cough, even when she had gastric flu at christmas. Snuggling on a comfy chair with the reader or tucked up in her bed this book always does the trick, leaving a calm, well rested, contented little girl for her parents when they come to pick her up. Well worth a prominent position on any parents book shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buddhism is compassion 30 Jun 2011
This illuminating, full-color book shares 20 gentle stories with themes for all to enjoy regardless of our religion or age: "Anything is possible when you are moved by love", "Forgive others even when they have wronged you" "Keep going until you achieve your goal", "Look beyond the obvious to find the truth". The book features animals and characters that appeal to the kids and I especially like the wise summary at the end of each story:

"It's all too easy to lose our patience with people and act unkindly. A wise person knows that showing kindness and compassion is the most effective way to bring out the best in others. (The Grateful Bull, p47)"

After a day full of pursuit, excitement and action, this calming material is what I need to spend some quality bedtime with the kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring stories 11 Dec 2010
I bought this for my daughter when she was 2 and we have ready stories from it every night for over a year now. She has her favourites and they are lovely stories with a purpose and message behind them. Have tried the meditation techniques, think my daughter is still a bit young for these as we have lots of giggles, but it's fun to try. Loved the book so much have bought copies to give as Christmas gifts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for grumpy kids at bedtime 16 May 2012
By sharon
Fantastic price as I paid about 20pounds for it in a new age shop years ago. This is my 5 year old's favourite bedtime book, I bought this when she was a baby as I liked the messages & illustrations. It's a very gentle and helpful book which uses fable type stories to illustrate human qualities, frailties and failings. I feel it sets a nice relaxed tone for bedtime and my husband, four year old & I enjoy the stories too. Some really good other introductory sections on meditation, visualisation & relaxation techniques. Easy breathing techniques which I think many adults would benefit from too. I sometimes do the relaxation exercise with my 5 year old at bedtime when she has had a tantrum, after she has calmed down. This helps to focus on something other than what her tizzy was about, engage again in a lighthearted way & hopefully to learn an alternative way to calm herself down in the longer term. Nice old fashioned tales which are not overly religious. We are RC & I like this as a way of introducing another religion & helping her to understand the common beliefs in humanity & virtue.

2.0 out of 5 stars spoilt by pictures & too strong a buddhist message
This book of quite sweetly told stories is spoilt by what look like computer generated pictures - and very poor ones at that, birds having virtually no bodies, for example. Read more
