The Essential Budapest Guide!,
By
This review is from: Budapest Mini Guide (Bradt Mini Guides) (Paperback)
"This book is sheer enchantment to read. Even if you never have the opportunity to visit the city, you will feel you know it intimately after reading this delightful little guide. The two authors write with a loving and intimate knowledge of the city. While never compromising on detail or erudition, they manage to make the text read as compulsively as a Penny Dreadful - and, unusually for a travel guide, there is a laugh on almost every page. I was hooked from the minute I read the modest and delightful introduction, and the fascinating bits of Hungarian trivia in the shaded boxes that are scattered liberally thoughout the text were compulsive reading - I have found myself quoting the information gained as if I had always known it. While mercifully concise, the history of the city is written in sufficient detail to give substance to the complex and changing political climate of the place. The useful practical information is richly varied, from nightspots and eating places to the expected baths and spas (catering equally for all visitors, straight and gay) and also, unusually, to the natural habitat. Although the book is very conveniently pocket-sized, it contains a huge treasure-trove of local information which is invaluable to the visitor. Everyone should buy it!"

Great guide to a great city,
By Fog "Fog" (London UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Budapest (Bradt Travel Guide) (City Guide) (Paperback)
I had been to Budapest a dozen times before and exhausted three other guide books but still found plenty of new things in Bradt including bike tours, guided city walks and even a dentist. Wish I had found Bradt earlier, it conveys a real affection for the City. The guide presents all the practical stuff such as local transport, accomodation and eating at the start of the book when many guides will hide it away at the back. But is very strong on the must-see sights, culture and night life.

A well-judged guide,

This review is from: Budapest (Bradt Travel Guide) (City Guide) (Paperback)
This guide to Budapest achieves a perfect balance between readability and factual content. The passages on Hungarian history and character are well judged and written at the right level for the curious first time visitor. The listings are comprehensive and accurate, and assisted us in finding some excellent restaurants. The book is full of useful information and advice. In my case it paid for itself by pointing out that EU citizens over 65 travel free on public transport.
