4.0 out of 5 stars And I should know 'cos I was there.... 15 July 2009
By MisterKeith VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
....as Max Boyce used to say.

In 2008, having played several gigs up and down the UK, Tift Merritt flew back into the country to record a live album at a church hall in Buckinghamshire. I was one of the fortunate ones to be in attendance and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. What you get for your money here is a well-recorded album with minimal bells and whistles. It's solo Tift - no band here - so the songs are presented in their rawest form, and it's all good stuff.

However, what you miss is, oddly enough, Tift herself. On the evening, we were regaled with humorous stories, especially the saga of her "kidnap" by a confused taxi driver - unfortunately, this has been almost entirely removed in the edit, leaving little of Tift's personality to come through, which is a crying shame.

So, yes, this is a "live" album (and a good album) but not a true reflection of your typical Tift Merritt performance.

4.0 out of 5 stars On her own in England 3 Dec 2010
Format:Audio CD
I suspect that this live CD was recorded when the tiny, but perfectly-constructed Ms Merritt supported Teddy Thompson on his 2008 tour.

As a country artist with a huge soul sensibility, her three studio albums up to the point of this recording are essential purchases for any fan of soulful country. Buckingham Solo illustrates my pet theory that strong songs will always sound good no matter the arrangement, so, without horns, Hammonds and humbuckers, Tift strips them to the bones. Accompanying herself only on guitar or piano she sings strongly and passionately, yet with intimate tenderness - a huge and expressive voice, demanding your attention, from such a tiny frame.

This is unplugged in the extreme, and proof that without studio pixie dust, live soundboard trickery or a multi-instrumental safety net, genuinely talented performers with impeccable material can make a joyful and uplifting noise in any arena.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tift Merritt: Female Artist Of The Decade 29 Jun 2009
By Erik North - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
With only six months left in this first decade of the 21st century, the female singer who emerged during this period that has impressed me more than everyone else is Tift Merritt. On the basis of her first three studio albums--2002's BRAMBLE ROSE; 2004's TAMBOURINE; and 2008's ANOTHER COUNTRY--the Texas-born, North Carolina-raised singer/songwriter has proven herself a force to be reckoned with, even if corporate radio won't bite for her. On those albums, she bought together many different outside influences, particularly those of Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Maria McKee, and Sheryl Crow, and combined them with her own unique songwriting abilities to produce an original, roots-rock approach--an extremely rare quality nowadays.

This new album of hers, recorded live last November in Buckingham, England, might very well be considered her "Unplugged" album, since all she relies on, variously, is piano, an occasional harmonica (on the ANOTHER COUNTRY track "Morning Is My Destination"), and, in particular, acoustic guitar. Tift's vocals may be considered fragile in the manner of Emmylou, but in an era of hyper-divas, whether in pop, R&B, or country, such fragility is kind of a welcome throwback to earlier times when honest, no-frills singing was the right thing. Ten of the album's twelve tracks, including "Morning Is My Destination", are from her earlier albums, but Tift throws in two new songs--a rendition of the late George Harrison's "I Live For You" and the brand new songwriting credit "Do Something Good" that spotlights her acoustic side as well as anything anyone else has ever done in this format.

Tift is my pick for Female Artist of The Decade; and this acoustic live album just sealed the deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific solo accoustic performance 22 Oct 2009

Love Tift's band, but this is a great solo venture for her -- showcasing the strength of her singing and songwriting. Great songs, minimally framed by guitar and piano -- good fun. Lucky Brits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rave from a biased fan 26 May 2011

A fine addition to her recorded repertiore; Tift fans should be very happy with this quieter, more personal sounding aspect of her great talent.A must for a true fan. A gift from Tift.
