Trumpeter Buck Clayton's time with the Count Basie Band established him as a soloist of distinction. This live session from 1990 was recorded just one year before Clayton's death at the age of 90. By this time Clayton had given up playing the trumpet and instead concentrated on writing and arranging charts for his big band with a startling energy and commitment. Featured soloists include Warren Vache on cornet, Jerry Dodgion on alto sax and Dick Katz on piano.
The charts are as briskly and confidently executed as ever and this recording is a fitting memorial to a remarkable survivor.
