Product Description

Product Description

In 2005, New Europe Writers began a ten year project to capture the spirit of a united Europe. Centred on a city, each volume presents a selection of essential contemporary writing from new and established authors that captures the vitality and variety of this dynamic place and time. 'Bucharest Tales' is the fourth of these anthologies, providing a panoramic insight into the Carpathian Garden and beyond.

A real find 4 April 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought Bucharest Tales because I wanted to learn more about my mother's homeland and also to acquaint myself with Romania's contemporary literary scene, and I'm very glad I did. The book offers a finely curated selection of poetry and prose by an exciting group of writers (current citizens as well as expatriates), whose works portray a complex society that's been through intense upheaval. Lyricism often mingles with the absurd to wonderful effect in many of these pieces, as does bluntness with indirection, love with hate. I plan to seek out other works in translation by many of these authors; in the meantime, this title is a real find.
