I think this adaptation of the unfinished novel by Edith Wharton is wonderful. I first saw it 15 years ago when it was broadcast on the BBC. I instantly fell in love with the 4 New York beauties or should i say 'buccaneers'. Their wit, beauty, imagination and vivacity caught my imagination then (when i was a mere 14 years old) and still today when i watch it i am drawn into the hyprocrisy of the New York and London society of the 1870s. Where being from the 'right' family and having the 'right' address is paramount in securing a 'good' husband. The story centres around the youngest of the 4, Nan St George played by Carla Guigino beautifully and her relationship with Guy Thwaite (played by the dreamy Greg Wise of 'Sense and Sensibility' fame). In the film it is her decision to marry another suitor in the form of Julius, Duke of Trevenick (James Frain) that makes this adaptation travel to the much darker depths of Victorian society (i.e. marital rape, suicide and homosexuality). All fairly taboo, controversial subjects now let alone placing them in this context. The rape scene is particularly brutal and shocking, which makes the audience root for the reunion of Nan and Guy all the more. When near the end of the film when they run off together and consumate their love. The feeling of deserved happiness and elation that these 2 'soul mates' are finally together is extremely satisfying for the audience. That their courageous journey to South Africa together is only the beginning of a new chapter as the film ends. The symbolic ending of leaving an England so 'deeply entrenched in tradition',a world of hyprocisy and constraint for a 'new world' full of possibilities and adventure.Read more ›

If you like period drama this represents 5 hours of sheer bliss. In my book its up there with the best including "Brideshead Revisited" and "Dance to the Music of Time". Fine acting, superb locations,( including Castle Howard) and highest production values. I had to watch it on my computer though. If it was made by the BBC with our licence money how come its only available as a Region 1 DVD?

I have just finished watching this having read the book only recently. The casting and acting are excellent, the costumes gorgeous, and the locations beautiful. I was a bit daunted initially at the prospect of five hours viewing, but once I got into it I was keen to see the whole series and enjoyed it thoroughly.

The only reason I can't give it five stars is because, as another reviewer has pointed out, the screenwriters have altered quite a few key facts in the latter episodes which I don't think sit easily with what Wharton would have wanted. I won't detail them as they would be plot spoilers but the absence of Idina's revenge at the garden party was a great shame as this is a pivotal scene in the book. There is no suggestion in the novel that the one of the characters is homosexual which seems to have been added in the film to justify the breakdown of the marriage. Nor is abortion ever implied. I guess these inventions are there to create an added frisson, but with such a good story and such excellent acting it was completely unnecessary to jazz it up in that way.

If I hadn't read the book this would be a five-star review and I'm sure those who haven't will enjoy it tremendously if they like period costume drama done to the usual high BBC standards.

I first saw this when it came out in 1995 and tried unsuccessfully to obtain it for a number of years on dvd. I must echo the other reviewers who have praised this series. It is absolutely excellent and I cannot recommend it highly enough. The acting is beautiful and so are the locations where it is filmed. With regard to the dvd set itself, the cover is in Dutch and you need to click on the Dutch version of "No" if you don't want subtitles popping up at the beginning of each episode. Other than that, it is excellent value.

This adaptation is fantastic! I have loved it since I was a girl and saw the first episode on BBC1. I spent years obtaining the video (at much cost!) and am delighted it is FINALLY available on DVD. Recommended to all period drama enthusiasts. Tragic but brilliant and heart-warming with an amazing soundtrack - if only I could get the sheet music!

I saw this film on an old VHS tape which I borrowed from a library and have been trying to get it ever since. Tired of waiting for the BBC to release it as a Region 2 DVD, I bought it from amazon.com ... and it will not play on my machine. Just a word of warning then for all those who have a similar idea - it is not a multiregion edition and you will need a new player.
The film itself is absolutely beautiful. Why don't the BBC release it in the UK I do not know.

This is such a great BBC series, but I cannot understand why it has never been repeated, and why I had to buy a Dutch import DVD version?! The DVD, despite being Dutch, worked fine. The menus are in Dutch, but are pretty obvious to navigate. The dialogue is not dubbed (thank goodness) but in the original actors voices. Subtitles (Dutch I assume!) are available. The series itself is superb. Excellent acting from a wonderful cast of well-known British actors, good costumes, sets etc. A really thought-provoking story about making wise choices in marriage, not rushing into it and then regretting. Also, about the effort you can make (or not) to make a marriage work, despite any differences, and the effect our upbringing has on us (for good and for bad). If you love period dramas, give this a go - it's so good! I must go and read the book now...
