Amazon.co.uk Review
The second instalment of the popular Japanese anime, Bubblegum Crisis 2 contains the fourth, fifth and sixth episodes of the eight original videos. In a devastated high-tech Tokyo of a Blade Runner-ish future, four beautiful women disguised by their heavily armed exoskeletons protect society from killer androids and from an ambitious corporation that tries to take over the world, while also having complicated personal lives. The cute teenager NeNe always has a crush on someone or other; flighty Linna has to fit her superhero life into a busy social schedule; and Priss has her career as a rock singer as well as a habit of feeling emotional. Only the austere Sylia is entirely in control of her life--so much so that she needs the others for a bit of productive chaos.

In the episodes included they deal with a mysterious car that is riding down motorcyclists, help a tragic android who is vampirising citizens to feed a damaged friend and cope with attempts by an evil conspirator to frame them for mass mayhem. The stories rely rather too heavily on extended sequences of fast bikes and car racing, or mechanised bodysuits and big robots tearing each other apart, but the plotting can be subtle and the emotional scenes tense and fraught. Someone trying to get a sense of anime's strengths and weaknesses could do a lot worse than start here.

On the DVD: the disc is presented in a visual aspect ratio of 1.33:1 and has a very loud Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack which presents every screech of tortured metal vehemently and every pounding anthem in the slightly pompous score. There are no extras apart from a very extended documentation of the credits. --Roz Kaveney

4.0 out of 5 stars Certainly worth a chew..., 16 Oct 2001
By A Customer
I almost didn't buy this title, the bright pink box kinda put me off (being a 6ft 2" black clad biker, it didn't really suit me).
But I needed Something to watch, and being a recent manga/anime convert I thought I'd give it a try.
Its actually very good. Not Mind-blowingly brilliant (like perfect blue, or Blood : the last vampire), but thoughly enjoyable all the same, and probably has a wider audience, being suitable for (older) kids as well as adults. The episodes are loosely linked, so there is no need to buy the previous volume to enjoy this title.

PS2 WARNING It does not play quite right on the playstation 2 (it appears to be in black&white, or else has funny broken up bits at the bottom of the screen).
Its fine on a normal DVD player though.

Overall impression, an excellent action filled series with strong story lines, and a couple of memorable characters (Priss is cool!) If you like anime, its an essential addition to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars For one of my first animies this was a great start., 24 Aug 2001

The Bubblegum Crisis series is perhaps my first ever proper venture into Japanese animie and I was not disappointed. It starts off nicely and quickly gets to the action without losing you giving you a good first impression of the characters with this first volume and a good idea of what the Knight Sabers are all about setting the scene for what is to come later. And cunningly they put in a cliffhanger to get youto buy the next volume, but as if they had to do that to get you to buy the rest. I recommend that you get this and the rest of the series if possible, it really is worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tokyo 2040: Friendlier younger sister of AKIRA, with robots., 14 Jan 2001
By A Customer
THE definitive cyberpunk televised animé series, Bubblegum Crisis 2033 is given a facelift. The writers have changed a few things, but this takes a fresh start and a new look at the Bubblegum universe. The first few episodes centre around Linna Yamazaki, an athletic country girl come to Tokyo, seeking to join the Knight Sabers, a group of Vigilantes who fight against rogue boomers. In the Bubblegum universe, Boomers are sentient robots, who are made to do tasks that are dangerous and/or tedious to humans. While following Linna's antics and escapades, more is revealed about the mysterious Knight Sabers. Although this introduction helps 'new recruits' a lot, some knowledge of the original series aids understanding. Humour is provided in the form of Leon, a detective with the A.D. police, Tokyo's anti-rogue boomer police force. His falling for Priss and his comical love-hate relationship with Nene, (both Knight Sabers) provide a refreshing break between all the action. I would advise parental guidance for children under twelve, as there is a fair amount of violence in this series. Aside from this, Bubblegum Crisis Genesis is well worth a look, especially for fans of this genre.
