Review

"Over 200 illustrations taken from the archives of the Illustrated London News covers a range of newspaper and magazine images, from stop cartoons and line drawlings to sketches and paintings...it's also highly recommended for art libraries strong in milirary art history, and for any collection strong in World War II archives."- "The Midwest Book Review" (June 2008)

"This collection of 250 illustrations from the archives of the Illustrated London News has been carefully selected as the best of the batch. Most of these illustrations have not had public viewing for over 90 years... The landscape format of the book as well as the superlative printing on thick, quality paper makes this a volume you will cherish for years to come." -Scott Van Aken, "modelingmadness.com" (April 2008)

"Chosen as a "must-read" recommendation on "Sgt. Santa's Reading List" in "Armchair General, January 2009.

Product Description

It is often said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but during World War I, newspaper illustrations were worth even more, not only conveying the news to anxious families at home and soldiers in battle, but also entertaining and lifting the spirits of a nation at war. This thematic collection of 250 World War I illustrations taken from the archives of the Illustrated London News, including light-hearted strip cartoons and line drawings, poignant sketches and hard-hitting political satire, by both well-known illustrators and the men in the trenches these illustrate the mood and humour of a nation at war. Many of the illustrations included are published for the first time in 90 years, and together they are a unique, bittersweet portrayal of the Great War.

Brushes and bayonets 13 July 2011
Format:Hardcover
Such a good book, a very emotive subject and beautifully presented. Authentic sketches done in situ evoke strong emotions and these were no exception. Each period has its own style and also has a certain charm. The victorian and edwardian illustrators were magnificent draughtsmen and their cartoons are a joy to behold. I cannot remember when I have enjoyed a book so much.

Great art of the Great War 28 Mar 2010
By James D. Crabtree - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book has a wonderful collection of cartoons and other artwork produced during World War I. These mostly reflect the views of the British. A good addition to anyone's collection of WWI books, this covers an aspect barely touched on by other books on the conflict.
