Elisabetta Brusa was an entirely new name to me and I bought this CD purely on impulse as the blurb on the back promised something different from the usual modern 'barbed wire'.
Her idiom is strongly tonal, but she writes freshly and has a good ear (her orchestration, especially in La Triade is phenomenal, vividly painting the storm it describes sonically). Messidor makes an immediate impression - a beautifully crafted, exhilarating work which makes an excellent introduction to Brusa's soundworld.
In all, a fascinating discovery - thanks for Naxos's enterprise in sponsoring new works by contemporary composers. My only reservation was some sour oboe intonation here and there in an otherwise well-played performasnce - hence the four stars. I give the works themselves five stars.

HASH(0x9f1cdb94) out of 5 stars Another fine Naxos discovery 27 Aug. 2011

I'm surprised the reviewer of the other disc praised it and said he would seek out more Brusa, while only giving it three stars. Since Amazon forces you to give even the most terrible product at least one star, three stars is only average. But this release is much better than average even considering Naxos' consistently high standards.

Brusa's music is completely modern, but also accessible, interesting, entertaining and enjoyable. It's the kind of music that makes you want more, and in fact I just put the second volume into my CD player. It seems to be just as good as this one. Naxos has once again found a talented composer ignored by the other labels.

HASH(0x9ddb481c) out of 5 stars Okay, But.......... 26 Dec. 2015

I came to Brusa's music via her recording of the Symphony No. 1 and the filler titled Merlin, a Symphonic Poem. I found the symphony to be reminiscent of Alan Pettersson's symphonies, that is, struggling and churning, but still tonal and musical. Merlin really caught my ear and is the portion of that CD to which I frequently return. The other orchestral works make me wonder if Brusa was an abused child? She simply seems incapable of composing music which does not struggle, churn, seem relentless; it generally seems to go nowhere specific and does not hold you in the manner of her Symphony No. 1. I note that one other reviewer gives this a 5 Star rating, so clearly there is quite a divergence of thought on this music. I doubt that most will find it at all rewarding. Certainly not what I had anticipated from my initial contact with Brusa's music.
