This is a deeply moving record of a unique occasion. The performances are very individual and would obviously not be suitable as first choice 'library' recommendations but are valuable for their special insights. The Mahler is often very lovingly and emotionally performed though the finale has vigorous bustle and energy as well as charm. Schwarzkopf has criticised her performances here and, with some justice, felt that she did not have the right kind of voice for Mahler lacking appropriate firmness in the lower part of the voice. Nevertheless she sings with ravishing tone and casts a mesmerising spell over the solo songs with her rapt inwardness and breathtaking changes of vocal colour. The recording is very close and remarkably clear - perhaps almost too clear since the imperfections of a live occasion tend to be highlighted.
