This is a deeply moving record of a unique occasion. The performances are very individual and would obviously not be suitable as first choice 'library' recommendations but are valuable for their special insights. The Mahler is often very lovingly and emotionally performed though the finale has vigorous bustle and energy as well as charm. Schwarzkopf has criticised her performances here and, with some justice, felt that she did not have the right kind of voice for Mahler lacking appropriate firmness in the lower part of the voice. Nevertheless she sings with ravishing tone and casts a mesmerising spell over the solo songs with her rapt inwardness and breathtaking changes of vocal colour. The recording is very close and remarkably clear - perhaps almost too clear since the imperfections of a live occasion tend to be highlighted.

A Great Tribute to a Great Man 17 Nov 2007
By Peter Miller - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I've had this recording for over 20 years from an orginal Japanese LP then the CD. The Schubert is lyrical yet exciting as to be expected by Walter.

The Symphony No. 4 is the best one in my opinion by Walter and the Vienna Philharmonic. There are things I hear in this recording that I had to go back and look at the score to see. The flowing violin melody of the second movement near the end is an example of this. All is all it is well paced even if some think it is slow. It works for me and leaves me floating every time I listen to it.

The songs are good as well. It is so rare that a concuctor gets to do this that its historical significance cannot be ignored.

The last farewell! 5 Aug 2009
By Hiram Gomez Pardo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
For many reasons, Bruno Walter always aroused among his fervent admirers an unexplainable sensation of being before a sort of great Godfather conductor,an encyclopedic human being, a modern shaman in the truest sense of the term.

In this sense, his presence on the stages was always a sort of transcendental and unique experience. Bruno Walter's Mahler was - if you may- the final result of a life's experience. Besides, Walter was besides, a champion conductor in Brahms and Mozart. On the other hand, he was a profound observer and meditative human being. He lived this unique transitional that bounded the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution, as well as both World Wars. On the other hand, his countless relations with so many musicians, conductors and artists of all caliber, made of him an exception witness in what concerns the preservation of the musical tradition but also, the worriment for diffusing of contemporary composers (like Samuel Barber, for instance). His peerless honesty and absolute commitment as music and conductor has permeated many conductors of the present. He is part of the reduced elite of the most remarkable musical conductors ever.

Don't miss this priceless musical document.
