With his wonderful album 'Lupercalia' not far behind him Patrick Wolf
is back with this must-have EP recorded in London earlier this Autumn.
There are six new numbers in the set plus a reprise of 'Together' (the
strongest contender on the aforementioned release). In terms of ambience it is
a mixed bag. The upbeat near-ecstatic mood of 'Lupercalia' is preserved
in the cracking composition 'Time Of Year' (that's what love does for you!);
big resounding beats, frisky brass and a warmly modulated vocal performance
lifts our spirit and warms our bones. With little more than a piano and an ondes
martinot for company Mr Wolf delivers a stirring rendition of the Parry/Blake
warhorse 'Jerusalem', dragging it, bright as a new pin, into the twenty-first
century. 'Nemoralia' (The ancient Roman "Feast Of The Torches") is a darker
invention full of angular percussion, grinding electronica and soaring sax;
a feisty pagan dance to accompany the full moon for which it was intended.
'Pelicans', too, suggests another arcane ritual with its faltering beats, chants
and a passionately soaring vocal to rank with his very best achievements.
Opening track 'Bitten' sports a fine string arrangement and a strong pounding
melodic presence and final track 'Trust' brings the set to a melancholic close
in a flurry of mercurial harp, clarinet and accordion. Lovely tune, eloquent lyrics.
On this small showing Mr Wolf continues to demonstrate that he remains one of our
finest and most distinctive songwriters. 'Brumalia' is far more than an afterthought.
Highly Recommended.
