I had previously enjoyed 4th, 7th and 8th in the days of owning cassettes and bought these as an inexpensive update. The german company who sent them did everything fine. There are no written notes with the cds. The recording quality and playing is very good with the louder sections particularly clear. They are however live recordings and the odd cough in the quieter bits in the 7th may grate a little. Overall I love the spacious sound of these Bruckner symphonies- a bargain introduction at this pric.

Earlier this year, the "Brilliant" label issued a superb box of Bruckner symphonies mostly conducted by Heinz Rögner. Most reviewers, including me, loved it but it must be said that all of his tempi are all on the swift side, whereas the timings here are more conventional without being the least stodgy. The performance editions chosen are conventional, usually Bruckner's later or latter thoughts and the recording acoustic is warm and broad with a little reverberation - always desirable in Bruckner - derived from the location of the Weingarten basilica. These recordings were made from live performances over nine years between 1997 and 2006.

Austrian conductor and Bruckner specialist Roberto Paternostro knows how the composer's music should go and clearly galvanised his excellent regional orchestra in these live performances to perform beyond expectations. I would love to do some blind comparisons with those who complain about flaws and problems in their playing, although I accept and can hear for myself that their string tone is not always ideally sumptuous and particularly in a favourite Brucknerian device such descending string figures there is sometimes a certain awkwardness. Yes, there is the occasional split note from the horns or sour tuning in the woodwind - but intonation glitches are hardly flaws never encountered in live performances by the greatest orchestras and by and large I listened to these recordings with a mounting sense of delight in their "rightness". I was especially impressed by their accounts of the First, Fifth and Seventh; to take an example almost at random, the transition five minutes into the second subject of the first movement of the Fifth is wonderfully judged.

It seems to me that the previous reviews have been unappreciative. This a very enjoyable set with
excellent sound,a marvellous acoustic and good performances.Very good value for money and well worth buying if you are on a tight budget.

Perhaps evidently not a first choice for the best version around but still very good. Could also be a good & cheap introduction to Bruckner or a widening of an existing collection as in my case.
The price is if anything too low for what it offers.

These recordings were made in a big reverberant space. That entails gain and loss. The gain resides in the attractive effect on the recordings' sound. The loss resides in a sense that the playing is occasionally uncoordinated: presumably players cannot always judge their entries as well as they might do in a recording studio.

In general, I like the steady tempos - seemingly in the tradition of von Karajan, and the antithesis of the Furwaengler tradition.

While not the ideal, these are recordings worth persevering with. I rate them higher than Barenboim/BPO, which I find undistinguished both in sound and interpretation.
