Befreit Op.39 No.4

The Dresden Staatskapelle has a living Bruckner tradition, stretching back a century and more, which is lovingly curated by its new music director, Christian Thielemann, who is himself a powerful advocate for the composers symphonies as the pinnacle of the Austro-German tradition; and in particular for the Wagnerian resonances of the Seventh, whose Adagio was shaped by news of Wagners death in Venice. Hugo Wolf was also deeply affected by that news; his songs, like Bruckners symphonies, can be seen as oblique reflections on the influence of Wagner, especially when sung, as they are here by Renée Fleming, with the utmost delicacy and intimacy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 21 Dec 2013
Format:Blu-ray
The Wolf songs are lovely but the orchestrations don't do them justice. The piano originals are infinitely superior. Beautifully sung though. My problem is Thielemann's Bruckner. The constant tempo changes, unwritten pauses, rallentandos, etc. just make the symphony's structure fall apart. There is another Bruckner 7 by him on dvd which is much better. This one just doesn't gel. No match for Karajan, Wand and Haitink.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great performance 12 Nov 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
Well filmed, beautifully reproduced on Bluray.

At first, i felt the performance of the symphony a little tepid, but on repeated hearings/viewings, I discerned Thielemann's overall control and pulse. The second movement, in particular, is wondrous. the orchestra have a lustrous, but not thick tone. Individual solos are exemplary. Fleming sings the songs with great intensity and understanding, as well as with her normal rich tone. The whole concert is an experience. Unusually for me, I listened to it 4 times in a row!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rare Wolf songs presented with beauty 15 Oct 2013
By s salter - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
Christian Thielemann conducts Renee Fleming and the Staatskapelle Dresden in a program of five songs on Hugo Wolf, with the more familiar Befreit of Richard Strauss (said to be a personal favorite of Fleming and Thielemann). The concert then concludes with the Symphony No. 7 of the Dresden Staatskapelle signature composer, Anton Bruckner. The dvd, recorded at a live performance in September 2012, is a gem - Thielemann is superb, the orchestral tone and discipline is marvelous, and Fleming...Ah, she delights yet again. When she sings the rarely heard songs of Hugo Wolf, those acknowledged excellent compositions are given a first class presentation. Thielemann is skilled in coordinating the singer with a full and powerful orchestra, so her full emotional and dynamic range are clearly heard.
5.0 out of 5 stars This is great . . . 24 May 2014

I really like the new classical music videos on Blu Ray, for the hi res 5.1 audio as well as the video. The Unitel Classica series with Christian Tielemann are especially well recorded, filmed and performed (see also the complete Beethoven symphonies boxed set and Brahms symphonies boxed set). Highly recommended.
