Well, this wonderfully produced box set produces for me a magical affect. Each symphony, yes, each and all, casts upon my senses an enormity which is difficult to describe briefly here and with limited metaphor, if at all. Suffice it to say, the effect is as though the awesome envelops me and demonstrates a presence of what I can only assume to be of cosmological proportion. I had to purchase a sound system I hoped would be capable of containing Bruckner's works and I was unable. I try to imagine the man in his place of study, without any of the modern paraphenalia that one tends to associate with creating and which can explore beyond perceptual bound. What a mind is it which 'reflects' that which is so very much further away in meaningful reality than any of the aforestated? And he does so by using the most beautiful of all vehicles, that of art, (music). Sir George Solti is commended for myriad upon myriad reasons, the most important one for enabling me to hear and to keep on hearing.
