Bruckner's choral music is always emotionally stirring, and the Choir of St Bride's Church do it full justice with a dynamic range that sends shivers down the spine.
These shorter motets were written for liturgical use between 1854 and 1892. Some are a cappella, others are accompanied on the organ, and the fifth track 'Ecce sacerdos', written to celebrate the thousandth anniversary of the diocese of Linz, has trombones as well as organ.
Having sung in both Locus Iste and Virga Jesse, these are the tracks which resonate most - oh how I wish the sopranos in our choir could get the exposed 'in se' entry with as much confidence!
If you enjoy emotional choral music, you will enjoy this. The harmonies and the passion of the singing will enthrall you. If however you want the passionless, ethereal sound of Gregorian chant, then this CD is not for you.

Here we have a different Bruckner to that of his massive symphonies. These are more subtle and intimate than his masses or Te Deum.

The selection contains none of his psalms, but nevertheless features just under half of the smaller sacred works that he composed. Most date from the 1860s to 1880s. Derek Wilson, writing in the Bruckner volume of the Master Musicians series, states that, "The later motets of Bruckner are unjustly neglected and yet none of them present major problems for a competent choir. An exploration of this little-known aspect of Bruckner's output brings exquisite rewards ..." I concur, the `Vexilla Regis' being one of the most beautiful, and the solely male-voiced `Inveni David' being one of the most dramatic. The `Iam Lucis Orto Sidere' sounds familiar but I cannot say why.

The sound on the disc is good, but I cannot comment on the performances as I have nothing with which to compare, but I sensed too great a dominance of female voices. Most feature just the choir, but the `Libera Me' has organ and trombones that add to the hint of a Bruckner mass in its opening, as does the `Ecce Sacerdos'. Meanwhile the structures of a Brucknerian symphony are present in the repeating shapes of the `Virga Jesse' and the decrescendos of the `Christus Factus Est'.

Bruckner is nowadays unfashionable and neglected.
This is undeserved. His church compositions - particularly choral pieces - are far better than, for example, those of Messaein or Poulenc.
This recording does justice to Bruckner, and bears repeated playings.
