I'm amazed that I'm the first person to review this wonderful set. Maestro Inbal "gets" Bruckner just as he does Mahler. Teldec CDs almost never disappoint you with their sonics, and this set is no exception. It is fascinating to listen to Bruckner's first versions of the symphonies that were later revised - the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 8th. In many cases, his later changes were for the better - but not in every instance. When you listen to the 8th, parts of it sound like a totally different work. The Radio-Sinfonie-Orchestra Frankfurt plays magnificently, especially the brass. Truly, they leave nothing in the case! And there are some movements, such as the scherzo of the 9th symphony, that are played with a frightening intensity, reckless abandon and even madness. This is how I imagine the Master himself must have wanted this demonic scherzo to be played. Inbal is one of the great Bruckner conductors, along with Giulini, Solti, and von Karajan. If you love Bruckner as I do, and are curious to hear the unrevised versions of many of his symphonies, don't hesitate to buy this set. Five stars doesn't do it justice!
